El Objeto Directo Direct Object Pronoun Sra. Altamirano

What is a direct Object? In English, him, her, them and it are direct objects pronouns. A direct Object pronoun is used to tell who or what receives the action.

When we used them? Direct Object pronouns, are usually used to avoid repetition of the direct object nouns. For example: Do you have your books? Yes, I have them Books is the direct object noun. Is what I have Instead of repeating “books,” I can substitute it by the DOP “them” DOP= Direct Object Pronoun

Before we move on, lets practice this concept Who or what is the direct object pronoun in the following questions (or who or what receives the action (verb) ¿Compraste la pasta dental en la farmacia? ¿Tienes tu tarea de español? ¿ Enviaste la carta para tu abuela? Verb/action

Respuestas 1. La pasta dental because that is what you bought. 2. La tarea, because that is what they are asking you if you have. 3. La carta because that is what you sent.

So, we get the idea, let’s move on… The Direct object pronouns lo, la, los, and las can refer to both objects and people. Lo, la would be translated as it when the subject of the sentence is an object. Or him or her if the subject is a person

Ejemplos ¿ tienes la tarea? Sí, la tengo.= yes, I have it. ¿Conoces a Carlos? Sí, lo conozco. Yes, I know him.

Los and las would be translated as them Ej: ¿Tienes tus libros? Sí, los tengo. Yes I have them. ¿Conoces a Ryan y a Luis? Sí, los conozco. Yes, I know them. * Notice, DOP agree in number and gender.*

The last question is: Where are DOP placed in a sentence ? Remember the reflexive pronouns? Me, te, nos? these are also pronouns, so they follow the same rules. DOP can be place: A. Before the conjugated verb B. Attached to the infinitive if you have two verbs in a sentence.

A. Before the conjugated verb ¿Sacaste el libro de la biblioteca? Sí, lo saqué Marcos, ¿Tienes tu tarea? Sí señora, la tengo. ¿Compraron la pasta dental? Sí, la compramos. Conjugated verb

B. Attached to the infinitive ¿ Sacaste el libro de la biblioteca? No, no lo pude sacar or… No, no pude sacarlo Infinitive In sentences like this one, is YOUR choice where you want to place the DOP. Both choices will be correct. But remember: ONLY if you have TWO verbs in the sentence, otherwise it will be, before the verb.

Ahora vamos a practicar! Think what is the word(noun) you don’t want to repeat in your answer. ¿ Quien lava los platos en tu casa? 2. ¿ Quién hace tus tareas? 3. ¿ Quién arregla tu cuarto? 4. ¿ Quién saca la basura? 5. ¿ Quién prepara la comida? 6. ¿ Quién hace las compras en el supermercado?

Possible answers (your subjects may vary) ¿Quién lava los platos en tu casa? Mi papá los lava. 2. ¿ Quién hace tus tareas? Yo las hago 3. ¿ Quién arregla tu cuarto? Yo lo arreglo.

4. ¿ Quién saca la basura? Mi hermano la saca 5. ¿ Quién prepara la comida? Mi mamá la prepara 6. ¿ Quién hace las compras en el supermercado? Mis padres las hacen
