THE SUBJUNCTIVE MOOD Spanish 2 – 6.2

THE PRESENT SUBJUNCTIVE In English, we say “I hope that…” to express hopes & wishes. Verbs that follow such expressions of hope don’t require a special verb form in English. However, they do in Spanish. This verb form is called the subjunctive.

WHAT IS THE SUBJUNCTIVE? The subjunctive is a mood which is used with hope, supposition doubt, want, etc. (not facts) The indicative (which is the mood we have used to far), expresses fact. Examples: Fact: Ganamos un premio hoy. = We are winning a prize today Vs. Hope: Ojalá que ganemos un premio hoy. = I hope that we win a prize today.

HOW TO EXPRESS WISHES OR HOPES We can express hope by using the phrase ojalá que with the present subjunctive. We also use the present subjunctive with the verbs esperar – to hope, querer – to want, necesitar – to need, and many others in which the information is not factual, but rather, a hope, wish, or desire.

HOW TO FORM THE SUBJUNCTIVE OF REGULAR VERBS Use what we already know about forming usted/ustedes/& negative tú commands. AR verbs – e/en endings & ER/IR verbs – a/an endings

EXAMPLE- VIVIR Yo viva Tú vivas Él/ella/ud. viva Nosotros vivamos ellos./ellas/uds. vivan

CONJUGATE COMER Yo coma Tú comas Él/ella/ud. coma Nosotros comamos ellos./ellas/uds. coman

CONJUGATE HABLAR Yo hable Tú hables Él/ella/ud. hable Nosotros hablemos ellos./ellas/uds. hablen

HOW TO FORM THE SUBJUNCTIVE OF STEM CHANGING VERBS Use what we already know about forming usted/ustedes/& negative tú commands. AR verbs – e/en endings & ER/IR verbs – a/an endings Stem changers will not stem change in nosotros, though they still have opposite endings.

PODER Yo pueda Tú puedas Él/ella/ud. pueda Nosotros podamos ellos./ellas/uds. puedan

CONJUGATE PENSAR Yo piense Tú pienses Él/ella/ud. piense Nosotros pensemos ellos./ellas/uds. piensen

CONJUGATE DORMIR Yo duerma Tú duermas Él/ella/ud. duerma Nosotros dormamos ellos./ellas/uds. duerman

PRACTICA – CONJUGATE IN SUBJUNCTIVE AND TRANSLATE SENTENCES INTO ENGLISH 1. Ojalá que mis amigos (tomar) muchas fotos. 2. Ojalá que Julio (recibir) su invitación. 3. Ojalá que mis padres (pensar) que el estreno es divertido. 4. Ojalá que yo (ver) a mucha gente famosa hoy. 5. Ojalá que a Antonia le (gustar) la película. 6. Ojalá que tú (encontrar) fácilmente el lugar del estreno. 7. Ojalá que la película no (fracasar). 1. tomen 2. reciba 3. piensen 4. vea 5. guste 6. encuentres 7. fracase

SIDES The verbs ser, ir, dar, estar, and saber (SIDES) are also irregular in the subjunctive. Because they are irregular, they should be memorized. Conjugate them in your packet (see packet 5.1 & 6.1 for more info on SIDES)

CAR, GAR, ZAR When forming the present subjunctive of verbs ending in car/gar/zar, change the spelling of the verb stem. Conjugate sacar, pagar, and empezar in your packet

SACAR Yo saque Tú saques Él/ella/ud. saque Nosotros saquemos ellos./ellas/uds. saquen

CONJUGATE PAGAR Yo pague Tú pagues Él/ella/ud. pague Nosotros paguemos ellos./ellas/uds. paguen

CONJUGATE EMPEZAR Yo empiece Tú empieces Él/ella/ud. empiece Nosotros empezemos ellos./ellas/uds. empiecen

NOW… Take out your practice multiple choice final and complete the last 5 questions on the subjunctive. We will go over these together when done.
