1 Ejercicio técnico: Módulo de funciones para la instalación del sistema operativo de Systems Management Server 2003 Slide Title: Title Slide Keywords: Key Message: Slide Builds: 0 Slide Script: Hello and welcome to this Microsoft TechNet session on Technical Drilldown: Systems Management Server 2003 OS Deployment Feature Pack. My name is {insert name}. Those of you who know SMS at all will know that for a long time SMS has had the ability to upgrade an existing operating system version, either with a service pack or an updated operating system. But with SMS we’ve never been able to go to a computer that has no operating system on it and no SMS client and deploy an operating system to it. That is, until now. In this presentation you will get the opportunity to hear about—and see in action—a new product that will do just that. This product is an add-on to SMS 2003 and is called the Operating System Deployment Feature Pack. It provides end-to-end solutions for deploying operating system images. You will hear about the product’s key features and will get information about planning an operating system image deployment so that you can get OSD installed and running quickly. You will also see an entire operating system deployment process in action from start to finish during the demonstration sections. Slide Transition: This session will walk you through the required image deployment processes and show you how the SMS 2003 OSD Feature Pack can benefit your organization when deploying operating system images on your network. Let’s start by taking a look at what we will be covering in this session. Slide Comment: Additional Information:

Capturar una imagen del sistema operativo Distribuir una imagen por medio de SMS Instalar una imagen en el PC objetivo Posicionar ADS, RIS y OSD Examinar problemas comunes con OSD Slide Title: Agenda: Introducing OSD Key Features and Scenarios Keywords: Key Message: agenda Slide Builds: 6 Slide Script: [BUILD1] We will start by looking at a quick overview of the key features and scenarios. In other words, what can OSD do and how does it do it? Where does OSD (Operating System Deployment) fit into the image deployment infrastructure? We will also look at what is required to install OSD. [BUILD2] Later, we will look at the processes involved when you capture an operating system image using this feature pack. This will include details on which operating systems are supported for image capturing and which clients are supported for image deployment. [BUILD3] Then we will look at how you deploy the captured operating system images to your clients utilizing SMS. This will include how to create image packages, how to create and configure image programs, and how to distribute and advertise your operating system image packages. [BUILD4] After that, we will look at the processes involved when installing the operating system image on your clients. We will see what happens when the client receives this image and what processes and phases occur during that operating system image installation. [BUILD5] We will then discuss the positioning of the OSD Feature Pack in relation to other image-deployment technologies and solutions, and discuss the scenarios each is most suited to. [BUILD6] The session will end with a look at the typical problems that Microsoft’s consultants and customers have encountered when using this product, and how to potentially solve them. Slide Transition: Let’s start with the key features of the OSD Feature Pack. Slide Comment: Additional Information:

Show what the main product features are of the SMS 2003 OSD Feature Pack. Slide Builds: 4 Slide Script: [BUILD1] The OSD Feature Pack is integrated with SMS 2003, so if you are already using SMS, you are probably already aware of its benefits. But just to summarize, and for those who do not already know, the benefits include: inventory-based planning and targeting for software distribution, administration-control features for software distribution, and the ability to configure how your users will interact with your advertised software packages. SMS can also manage the replication of potentially large images throughout a distributed enterprise environment, and it has some great technologies for managing the distribution of software and the replication of data over slow WAN links. It also provides excellent capabilities for centralized tracking and status-reporting features. There are approximately 19 different status messages that are created during the process of deploying an operating system image to a client. This is great for pinpointing exactly where a client is in the deployment process. So if it fails for some reason you can quickly and easily see which stage it has reached and therefore where the problem lies. The OSD Feature Pack also adds a few of its own specific reports to the existing SMS reporting capabilities. [BUILD2] OSD also has a customizable architecture in that it allows you to add and configure custom actions, which can be initialized during the various phases of the deployment process. You will look at these custom actions later in the session, and we will also use them in the demonstrations. You can also provide additional drivers for the WinPE process to add to your target computers where necessary. [BUILD3] The third key feature worth highlighting is the advanced imaging format that OSD uses, called WIM. WIM is a new imaging file format from Microsoft that is a file-based technology, which means that images are smaller than they would be using a sector-based imaging technology. It does not copy every single sector of the hard drive—it just copies the files from the reference computer and puts them on the target computer. The WIM file format is also non-destructive since, by default, it does not format or repartition the target hard drive. Instead, it deletes the system files it knows aren’t needed anymore and puts on the new files. WIM also eliminates duplicate files by only copying one instance of a file that exists in several locations on a reference system over to the target computer, and then providing reference links to the other duplicate file instances. Together, these characteristics of the WIM image file format help to reduce the total size of the images created and therefore increase the compression rate to about 3 to 1. As you will see in the demonstrations in this session, the capture we will create of Windows XP Professional and Office 2003, which would normally take up about 1.8 Gb to 2 Gb of space on your hard drive, will actually be compressed down to about 740 MB in the WIM image file.

6 Funciones clave de SMS OSD (Notas)
Integración con SMS 2003 Arquitectura que se puede personalizar Nuevo formato de generación de imágenes Windows (.wim) Secuencia avanzada de tareas de instalación de imágenes [BUILD4] The last set of key features worth mentioning are the advanced image installation task-sequencing features. There are a lot of different things you can do to customize how this operation is going to impact your users. These include user notification balloons, which existing SMS users will have already seen before, that tell your users what is happening with software updates and when they are about to occur. OSD uses the same alerting technology to inform users when an operating system is about to be deployed to their system, and may also provide them with the ability to postpone the event until later, if this feature is enabled. We can also capture computer and user state information from the reference computer, including items such as user profiles, My Documents folders, and all user preferences and settings. These will be restored back on to the target computer when the new operating system is deployed to it. In the demonstration we will be using Microsoft’s User State Migration Tool (USMT) to do this, but you can also use a third-party tool for state migration. Another great feature here is the ability to run optional SMS advertisements automatically after your image has been deployed to the target computer. You can configure your operating system image programs so that once the operating system image has been deployed to the system, but before the user can log on for the first time, it runs several advertised programs on this specific computer. This would be extremely beneficial in cases where you have a base operating system that you want to deploy to all computers, but you also want to deploy different applications to different systems, which will be provided by these SMS advertised software packages. These advertisements would be run during the State Restore phase and therefore would occur before the user log-on screen appears. Lastly, you will also see in the demonstrations that throughout the different phases of the OSD process, you have the ability to include and run custom installation scripts to perform various tasks, such as using a third-party tool to repartition other hard drives on the destination computer or run some other disk-management utilities. Slide Transition: So now let’s look at some core scenarios for OSD. Slide Comment: Additional Information:

7 Escenarios principales
Migración en el mismo lugar Recuperación mediante el grupo de soporte (avería y reparación) Nueva instalación de PC (“bare-metal”) Slide Title: Core Scenarios Keywords: Usage scenarios Key Message: Detail the core usage scenarios for the OSD Feature Pack. Slide Builds: 3 Slide Script: There are really three primary areas that are addressed by the OSD Feature Pack. [BUILD1] The first is an in-place migration scenario, which is probably the most common scenario, where you have an existing SMS client computer in your environment that is running Windows 2000 Professional, for example, and you have decided to upgrade it to Windows XP. With this scenario, you are going to use all the SMS features we discussed previously, such as inventory for identifying your systems and software distribution for the targeting, deployment, and status tracking of image packages. During this process, the computer and user state information is captured, the new operating system image is deployed to the target computer, and other SMS advertisements may be installed. Then you restore your computer and user state information, and all the way through this you have the centralized status and reporting capabilities to find where you are in that process. This scenario is the one that is followed in the demonstrations in this session, so we really don’t need to go into too much depth on this scenario at this stage. [BUILD2] The second primary scenario is the Help desk recovery (or “break and fix”) scenario, where you have a computer with a current operating system and you do not want to upgrade the operating system, but perhaps a user has somehow managed to damage or completely destroy the operating system and it needs to be repaired. The easiest way, and the way the most Help desks now solve this kind of issue, is not to actually spend precious time and money attempting to diagnose and repair the operating system, but to just replace it with a new image of the same operating system. This can be achieved in two ways: either by deploying a new operating system image package through SMS (if the computer and the operating system are only partly damaged and you can still get packages from your SMS site server). This is similar to the in-place migration scenario. Or, the other more-common method in this scenario is to create an Image Installation CD in SMS, and then start the computer with the faulty operating system of that CD, and then select an operating system image from an SMS site server. The site server will find a distribution point closest to you to load the new operating system image. With both of these methods, it may be possible to migrate the user state information using a tool such as USMT, but it will depend largely on the severity of the problems that exist in the current operating system. [BUILD3] The last scenario is a new computer install scenario (which is also often referred to as a “bare-metal” install). With this scenario, you can use the SMS Image Installation CD or another technology, such as Remote Installation Services (RIS), to deploy the operating system image. In an RIS environment you integrate your OSD images with RIS to deploy the operating system to your new computers using a self-service, user-initiated mechanism. We will be looking at that solution in a bit more detail at the end of this presentation. Slide Transition: So now let’s take a quick look at an overview of the operations of OSD and what they look like in implementation. Slide Builds: 3 Slide Script: Three primary areas are addressed by the OSD Feature Pack. The first thing that you need to do is create your reference or source computer, that is, the computer that you want to image. In the demonstration environment this is going to be a Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1 computer with Office 2003 and the SMS Advanced Client installed on it. [BUILD1] Once you have your reference computer set up and configured the way you want it, with the correct settings and software applications installed on it, you then capture that image to create your WIM file, that is, your operating system image file. [BUILD1] The first being that the OSD Feature Pack does not operate in a stand-alone capacity. It requires SMS 2003 with Service Pack 1. It does not work with SMS 2.0 or versions of SMS 2003 without Service Pack 1, and it will not work outside of SMS in a stand-alone mode. [BUILD2] OSD is available as a free download from the link on the slide (approximately 75 MB). [BUILD3] It is a self-extracting file that contains six files, one of which is the user guide for OSD. This guide provides step-by-step instructions for integrating OSD images with RIS, which we mentioned as a possible scenario earlier in the session. [BUILD4] Then you run the Setup utility that installs OSD on your SMS site server, and you’re ready to go. In the demonstration, the OSD Feature Pack has already been installed to speed up the process. It is also important to remember that you will need to install OSD on all computers that you will be running a remote console admin on to create or manage the operating system images from. Slide Transition: So now that we have seen what OSD can do and how to install it, let’s see how to actually capture an operating system image. Slide Builds: 6 Slide Script: [BUILD1] So which clients can you capture an image from? [BUILD2] You can only capture current operating systems, that is, all versions of Windows 2000, all versions of Windows XP, and all versions of Windows Server You cannot capture Windows 98 or Windows NT systems as images you want to deploy. [BUILD3] Also, the reference computer you are going to take an image of has to have the SMS 2003 SP1 Advanced Client installed on it. [BUILD4] As far as the clients supported for image deployment is concerned, it depends on which technology you use for deployment. [BUILD5] When updating legacy clients using SMS software distribution, you can upgrade Windows NT 4.0 SP6 clients and above. You cannot upgrade a Windows 98 system using OSD and SMS software distribution. [BUILD6] If you want to upgrade a Windows 98 computer, you must use RIS or create an Image Installation CD in SMS. Note that you can also use these methods for any of the other operating systems as well. Slide Transition: Now let’s look at some specific reference computer requirements when capturing an image using OSD. Slide Comment: Additional Information: Page 13: ‘System Requirements’ – “SMS 2003 Operating System Deployment Feature Pack Users Guide” (OSD_FP_Guide.doc - included when the Feature Pack is downloaded)

Show the requirements for a reference computer. Slide Builds: 4 Slide Script: For the capture to be successful, the reference computer must fulfill the following requirements: [BUILD1] When capturing an operating system image, access to a server running the DHCP service is required by the Windows Pre-installation Environment, or WinPE as it is better known. WinPE needs DHCP to acquire an IP address; it uses it to connect to the SMS share to store the image on after it has been captured. [BUILD2] Additionally, the reference computer you are going to take an image of must have the operating system running on the C: drive, and the drive must be formatted with the NTFS file system. If either of these is not the case, you cannot use OSD to capture the operating system. [BUILD3] Sysprep requires that the reference computer be in a workgroup and not a domain. [BUILD4] Also, for Sysprep to work, the sysprep.exe and setupcl.exe files must be located on the reference computer’s C:\ drive in a folder called Sysprep. Slide Transition: Now let’s look at the main processes that occur to capture an image using OSD. Slide Builds: 6 Slide Script: [BUILD1] First, take your reference computer, and configure it the way you want it to be when it is deployed to other computers. Then install the relevant operating system and service packs, and install any applications you want to be contained in your base image. In our case, we have installed Office 2003, but you may have other line-of-business applications that all your computers need, so you should install them on your reference computer and have it in your base image. Last, you need to have the SMS 2003 SP1 Advanced Client installed. Essentially, you create an .iso file using the Image Capture CD in the SMS admin console, and then burn it to a bootable CD. Then you insert the CD, Autorun runs, and the SMS 2003 Image Capture Wizard starts. This wizard will walk you through the process of capturing that local hard drive information on C:\, including the operating system, the service packs, and any installed applications, including the SMS 2003 Advanced Client. During the wizard steps, you will be configuring capture settings, such as the name of the capture file and where it is to be stored. At the end of the wizard, you will click the Capture button, and the capture process will start running. [BUILD1] First, we need to import the WIM file into SMS. We do this by creating an image package in the SMS Administrator Console. This is not the same thing as creating a software package in SMS using an .msi file or a package definition file. This is specific to using OSD with SMS and is created in the node called Image Packages, which only appears in the console once you have installed the OSD Feature Pack on your SMS server. The next step in the operating system image-deployment process is to install the image on your target computers. Slide Transition: Now let’s look at what we need to do on the client end to get this operating system image package installed on our target computers. Slide Comment: Additional Information:

Slide Builds: 8 Slide Script: [BUILD1] On the client side, after the next refresh of policy and the advertisement has reached our client, the user will see an Assigned Program About to Run notification balloon appearing in the system tray, which cannot be disabled. In the demonstration, we will speed up the process by initiating the computer policy retrieval action immediately so that we do not have to wait for the next interval to occur. When the user double-clicks the notification icon in the system tray, a Program Countdown status box appears on the desktop with the default countdown value of five minutes. After five minutes, or sooner if the user clicks the Run button, an SMS message window opens on the desktop, which is created from a sample .rtf file provided with OSD. This message window is customizable, so you can add a corporate logo to it and set the countdown timer on it as well. In the demonstration, we will modify the text on the window to show that the package and message was created by the Corporate Help Desk and that it is a valid pop-up window and is safe to use. [BUILD2] At this point, the user can postpone the image installation for up to two days, if we have provided the ability to do, or the user can just click Install Now to run the program immediately. [BUILD3] The image installation phases listed on the slide start to initialize. [BUILD4] First we have the validation phase… [BUILD5] …then the state capture phase starts up. In our case we will be using USMT to capture the user and computer state information and specify it as a custom action in the image program’s properties on the Advanced tab. [BUILD6] Then, any pre-installation actions are run, if configured before the computer restarts. [BUILD7] Then, after the computer restarts and WinPE initializes, any install and post-install actions run. [BUILD8] Finally, the state restore custom actions run and restore the computer and user state information, which was captured by the state capture phase, and then the user log-on screen will appear and prompt the user to log on. Slide Transition: Before we run through the next demonstration, let’s take a brief look at the client-side requirements for OSD. 30 Requisitos de los PC objetivo
Show the requirements for a target computer. Slide Builds: 4 Slide Script: For the capture to be successful, the reference computer must fulfill the following requirements: [BUILD1] When deploying an operating system image to a target computer, WinPE is used to access the SMS distribution point and retrieve the operating system image file. Therefore, the target computer needs access to DHCP services during this install phase. [BUILD2] The target computer also requires a specific software distribution account. In the case of Advanced Clients, the Advanced Client Network Access account is required; and for Legacy Clients, the Legacy Client Software Installation account is required. These accounts are used by the OSD Feature Pack to connect to the distribution point when installing an image package on a destination computer. They are configured using the SMS Administrator console in the Software Distribution properties by clicking Site Hierarchy, clicking Site Settings, and then clicking Component Configuration. [BUILD3] Another issue to be aware of is that your images are HAL-specific, so you will need one image per each HAL type you have in your environment. [BUILD4] The last requirement to look at is that if your target computer has different hardware devices than the target, such as the network adapter, you could provide that additional driver, either on the Image Capture CD as part of the wizard for creating that or you could add them as part of a custom action during the later deployment phases. Slide Transition: Now that you have seen the operating system image-installation phases and client-side requirements, let’s review the image-installation process in more detail in the Installing an Operating System Image on a Target Computer demonstration. We will begin by verifying the current client configuration, and then deploy the OS image. 32 Tecnologías que se emplean
Windows Imaging (WIM) Entorno de preinstalación Windows (WinPE) Parte de disco User State Migration Tool (USMT) 2.6 Compartir carpeta USMT\Bin, no la carpeta USMT Slide Title: Technologies Used Keywords: technologies Key Message: Discuss the main technologies used in the operating system image-deployment process. Slide Builds: 6 Slide Script: [BUILD1] First of all, we have WIM, which is the new Windows imaging technology file format. It’s not based on any other imaging file formats that other applications use, such as Ghost or Drive Image; and it uses the same extension as in the Longhorn imaging environment, but that again will be a slightly different file format than this one. [BUILD2] Then there is the Windows Pre-installation Environment, or WinPE as it is known, which is used for capturing the image on the reference computer and for installing it on the target computer. WinPE also runs Sysprep to prepare the reference computer and configure the target computer. A version of Win PE is bundled with the OS Deployment Feature Pack. [BUILD3] For more information on WinPE, see the relevant documentation at [BUILD4] Although we did not actually use Diskpart in our demonstrations, it is an optional technology that might be used, but only in the “bare-metal” scenario, because if we are using SMS software distribution to deploy an image to an existing client, the hard drive already needs to be there. [BUILD5] Finally, we have the User State Migration Tool , or USMT. We have been using version 2.6 in the demonstrations in this session. USMT is used to perform state capture and restore operations and can also capture and restore all user profiles on a computer if required, as in the demo when we added the /all option to our state capture and state restore actions. Remember that USMT is not included or installed with OSD; it is a free 1.6-MB download available from the Microsoft Web site. [BUILD6] Also remember that after you install USMT you need to share the USMT\Bin folder as a source location for USMT when you are specifying it in the custom actions for state capture and state restore operations. Do not share the USMT folder itself, but the Bin subfolder instead. Slide Transition: Let’s summarize the key points from this session about the OSD Feature Pack. 33 Resumen de la sesión El módulo de funciones OSD agrega la instalación de imágenes al SMS 2003 SP1 Implementa imágenes de Windows 2000, Windows XP y Windows Server 2003 Los sistemas objetivo pueden ser Windows 98 o versiones más actualizadas Slide Title: Summary Keywords: Key Message: Session summary Slide Builds: 3 Slide Script: [BUILD1] SMS adds operating system image deployment with the OSD Feature Pack, which is a new product. It can be downloaded from the Microsoft Web site so you can try it for yourself. Remember that the OSD Feature Pack requires SMS 2003 SP1 to operate. [BUILD2] You can use it to deploy Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 images. You cannot use it to deploy any operating systems prior to Windows If you want to deploy Windows 98 or Windows NT 4.0, you have to use a different technology. [BUILD3] Target systems can be Windows 98 or later. You can do this as an in-place upgrade using SMS package distribution to existing SMS clients or to a brand-new computer or to a bare-metal system with no operating system and no SMS client on it. You can also use RIS or an Image Installation CD.
