Notice that the yo and él/ ella/ ud. forms are the opposite of the present tense –er/-ir endings, plus an accent.

4 Preterite of ir/ser and hacer Ir and ser have the same conjugations in the preterite. To decide which verb is being used, look for a after the verb (ir). Hacer changes its stem to hic- (except for él/ ella/ ud. hiz). Notice that it has unique endings! fuifuimos fuistefuisteis fuefueron hicehicimos hicistehicisteis hizohicieron

6 Stem-changing –ir verbs in the preterite Verbs that end in –ir and have an e i, e ie or o ue stem change in the present tense are going to stem change in the preterite. They will keep the regular –ir verb endings for the preterite. These verbs will stem change in the 3 rd person only – Dormir (to sleep)durmió durmieron – Pedir (to ask for)pidió pidieron – Seguir (to follow)siguió siguieron – Preferir (to prefer)prefirió prefirieron – Vestirse (to get dressed) se vistió se vistieron – Servir (to serve) sirvió sirvieron – Competir (to compete) compitió compitieron

8 -car, -gar, -zar verbs Verbs that end in –car, -gar, or –zar have a spelling change in the yo form only in the preterite tense. This spelling change is for pronuncation purposes. – -car verbs change from c qu – -gar verbs change from g gu – -zar verbs change from z c

10 Venir, querer, decir, traer The verbs venir, querer, decir, and traer are all irregular in the preterite. These verbs are like the others learned with irregular stems- they share the same endings. Their stems are: – Venir vin- – Querer quis- – Decir dij- – Traer traj-

11 Verbs with irregular stems in the preterite All of these verbs have irregular stems in the preterite and share the same endings: – Hacer – Estar – Poder – Poner – Tener – Saber – Venir – Querer – Decir* – Traer* *Remember, decir and traer drop the i in the 3 rd person plural form!
