3 How do you know when to stem change?
You had to memorize a list of stem change verbs: Querer (e-ie) Empezar (e-ie) Jugar (u-ue) Pedir (e-i) Encontrar (o-ue) Etc…

4 When do you preterite stem change?
Stem changing in the preterite is EASY!!!! Follow these three simple rules: You stem change only “IR” verbs. You only stem change the “3rd” and “3rd plural” forms. The verb will only change from “E-I” or “O-U”. You conjugate the other forms like normal.

Verbs ending in –uir, such as destruir, have a spelling change in the preterite. The i becomes y in the Ud/él/ella and Uds./ellos/ellas forms.
