2 Uses of the subjunctive: To persuade someone else to do something To express emotions about situations To express doubt and uncertainty Ejemplo: El profesor sugiere que aprendamos los nombres de las colonias.

3 If the main verb is in the present tense, use the present subjunctive. Es importante que hagan la tarea. Nos alegramos de que la fiesta sea divertida. Los indígenas dudan que los europeos aprendan su lengua.

4 If the verb in the main clause is in the preterite, imperfect, past perfect or conditional, you must use the imperfect subjunctive in the dependent clause. Queríamos que lo hicieras. Quisimos que lo hicieras. Habíamos querido que lo hicieras. Querríamos que lo hicieras.

5 The imperfect subjunctive is used to soften requests or suggestions using querer, poder, and deber. Quiero hablar contigo. Vs. Quisiera hablar contigo. ¿Pudiera prestarmelo? Uds. debieran volver a casa.

6 To form the imperfect subjunctive: Put the verb in the third person plural form of the preterite tense and remove the –ron. Add the imperfect subjunctive endings: -ra-´ramos -ras-rais -ra-ran Ejemplo: comer > comieron >comieran

7 Ejemplos: Cantara, cantaras, cantara, cantáramos, cantaran Aprendiera, aprendieras, aprendiera, aprendiéramos, aprendieran Él se alegró de que comieran buena comida.

8 Verbs with stem or spelling changes and irregular conjugations in the ellos/ellas/Uds. form of the preterite will keep these changes in the imperfect subjunctive. Ir > fueron > La reina fuera. Hacer > hicieron > Yo hiciera Dormir > durmieron > Tú durmieras

9 El imperfecto del subjuntivo con si: If clauses To express hypothetical or untrue events. The order of the phrase can vary but the imperfect subjunctive must always be paired with si. Si tuviera un avión, yo iría a una isla privada. Haríamos un viaje a México para ver las pirámides si tuviéramos tiempo.

10 Como si… After como si (as if) you must always use the imperfect subjunctive. The other verb may be in either the present or past tense. Martín habla como si fuera un hombre poderoso. La comida del restaurante era tan buena que él se sentía como si estuviera en España.
