2 What is the present progressive and the uses of the present progressive.
* It describes actions in progress * The action is happening at the time it is being described. (in English) Verb to be + -ing I am waking They are dancing.

3 Formation of the present progressive
Estar + present participle (don’t forget to conjugate Estar) Present participle: For -Ar verbs  stem +ando For -Er and -Ir verbs  stem +iendo Ejemplo: hablando comiendo abriendo

4 Changes in the present participle (-ing)
*unaccented i between two vowels becomes the letter y: leer  leyendo. (the i of -iendo changed to y) Creer  creyendo

5 More changes -AR and -ER stem changing verbs don’t make a change in the present participle. Almorzar (oue) present Almorzar (no change) present participle. almorzando Entender (eie) present Entender (no change) present participle. entendiendo

6 But -IR stem changing verbs do make a change but it is different. (goes only half way) Preferir (eie) present Preferir (ei) present participle (preferring) Pedir (ei) present Pedir (ei) present participle (asking) Dormir (oue) present Dormir (oue) present participle (sleeping)

7 Using pronouns with the present progressive
Reflexive pronouns: 1. Attached to the present participle Yo estoy bañándome 2. In front of the conjugated form of estar Yo me estoy bañando When you attach the reflexive pronoun to the participle you must write an accent mark over the participle.

8 ¿Qué está haciendo María?
Ella está bailando

9 ¿Qué estáis haciendo vosotros?
Nosotros estamos cantando

10 ¿Qué están haciendo ellos?
Ellos están bebiendo cerveza en el bar.

11 ¿Qué está haciendo él? Él está hablando por teléfono con sus amigos.

12 ¿Qué están haciendo ellas?
Ellas están jugando baloncesto.

13 ¿Qué estás haciendo tú? Yo estoy pensando

14 ¿Qué estoy haciendo yo? Tú estás escribiendo una composición para la clase de español.

15 ¿Qué está haciendo María?
María está durmiendo.

16 ¿Qué está haciendo Pedro?
Pedro está leyendo.

17 ¿Qué están haciendo ellos?
Ellos están jugando al football americano.

18 ¿Qué están haciendo los estudiantes?
Los estudiantes están comiendo pizza.

19 ¿Qué está haciendo la camarera?
La camarera está sirviendo el vino.

20 ¿Qué estás haciendo? Yo estoy bañándome. Yo me estoy bañando.

21 ¿Qué está haciendo él? Él está afeitándose. Él se está afeitando.

22 ¿Qué estás haciendo? Yo estoy vistiéndome. Yo me estoy vistiendo.
Yo me estoy poniendo la corbata. Yo estoy poniéndome la corbata.

Ella se está peinando. Ella está peinándose.
