1 The present progressive is used in Spanish to express an action that is presently going on – an action in progress.

2 The present progressive is a compound verb (has two parts).

3 It is formed by using the present tense of the verb “estar” and the present participle – speaking, doing (-ing words). Form of estar + present participle

4 In order to form the present progressive, you must know how to conjugate the verb estar,
and how to form the present participle. You already know how to conjugate the verb estar: Yo estoy Nosotros estamos Tú estás Vosotros estáis Él está Ellos están Ella está Ellas están Usted está Ustedes están

5 To form the present participle (-ing) of most verbs in Spanish you drop the ending of the infinitive and add… -ando to the stem of –ar verbs -iendo to the stem of –er and –ir verbs hablar > habl- > hablando comer > com- > comiendo subir > sub- > subiendo

6 Present progressive form of estar + present participle Yo estoy hablando. (hablar) Tú estás comiendo. (comer) Él está subiendo la escalera. (subir)

7 To form the present progressive, simply conjugate the verb estar to agree with the subject of the sentence, and follow it with the present participle. Juan está comiendo pan. John is eating bread. María y Carmen están hablando con nosotros. Mary and Carmen are speaking with us.

8 Remember, only use the present progressive for actions that are “in progress.” Compare
the uses of the present indicative with the uses of the present progressive. Yo estudio español. (Present tense) I study Spanish. I am studying Spanish (these days). I do study Spanish. VS.

9 Estoy estudiando español. (PresentProgressive)
I am studying (right now, at this moment) Spanish.

10 Examples She is listening to music She form of “estar” + present participle of escuchar ella está escuchando música. We are studying vocabulary. Nosotros estamos estudiando el vocabulario. They are writing on the paper. Ellos están escribiendo en el papel. Are you eating in the cafeteria? ¿Estás comiendo en la cafetería?

11 Some present participals are irregular (don’t follow the –ando / -iendo rule).
