[BUILD2] Then, we will look at the basic concepts of Management Packs. What are they, what can they do for you and who writes them? [BUILD3] Then, we will discuss which Management Packs are available, and where you can obtain them from. [BUILD4] After that we will drill down further into 7 or 8 Management Packs. This section will mainly consist of demonstrations of those Management Packs and you will see what they are, how to configure them and see some real time MOM 2005 monitoring. [BUILD5] The session will end with a look at how you can be notified automatically of new and updated Management Packs. If we look at the underlying architecture we see we have a MOM server with a database hosted on it, which contains, among other things, the knowledge base. This server also hosts the various consoles that are needed to configure and manage MOM 2005, either interactively or using a web interface. The server is responsible for deploying all the rules we have in the management packs to the agents which you can see represented at the base of the graphic, and then the agents perform the monitoring activities. You can also see at the top of the graphic a data warehouse where reporting is performed. Many of the Management Packs we will look at in this session come with their own reports, we will see several different types of report and we will see what data we can report on. Slide Transition: Now let’s look at the next agenda topic, which is Management Pack Concepts.
What Are Management Packs (MPs)? Keywords: Concepts, management packs Key Message: To describe the concepts of Management Packs Slide Builds: 3 Slide Script: [BUILD1] Management packs are a container and distribution vehicle that MOM uses to deploy the required configuration information to monitor a system or application. [BUILD2] A management pack consists of a collection of rules, knowledge, tasks, views and reports that enable the management of a computer or an application. [BUILD3] Management packs allow you to specify how MOM collects, handles and responds to information and events. [BUILD4] They provide a definition of server health. Any variations from this definition can they be thought of as indicators of a condition that may require some intervention to avoid a potential outage or to recover from an incident. Slide Transition: So what is the goal of a Management Pack? Slide Comment: Additional Information: Page 33: ‘Deploying an Operating System Image’ – “SMS 2003 Operating System Deployment Feature Pack Users Guide” (OSD_FP_Guide.doc - included when the Feature Pack is downloaded)

To describe the goals of Management Packs Slide Builds: 5 Slide Script: [BUILD1] It is Microsoft’s goal to distribute management packs that are built by the teams that build the application, with help from the MOM team. For example the Active Directory product team built the Active Directory pack and the Microsoft Exchange product team built the Exchange management pack and so on. This is because the MOM team don’t have all the knowledge about those products that the product teams themselves do. Doing it this way means that unparalleled product expertise is put into each Management Pack that Microsoft develops and deploys. This same management paradigm is followed by third party developers with their own custom management packs. [BUILD2] The second goal of a management pack is to provide a consistent monitoring solution across different system services. This helps to streamline datacenter operations. [BUILD3] Another major goal is to reduce the time and cost of investigating and resolving problems you encounter, thereby lowering your TCO. But it is not just about collecting events and performance data. [BUILD4] They also provide a preemptive monitoring solution to provide you with a higher quality of service for your applications. This is because management packs provide the capability to go out and proactively look at your systems and applications and determine if you have configuration issues, or performance and sizing issues that you are maybe not aware of. [BUILD5] Lastly, management packs aim to provide an out-of-the-box solution to give you a fast return on investment. Virtually every management pack can be imported into MOM and without doing anything else you will get basic monitoring capabilities for that management pack. There will probably be some advanced configuration steps you will need to take to extend those monitoring capabilities, and you will see some examples of this management pack configuration in the demonstrations later in this session. Slide Transition: Now let’s look at the next agenda topic, which is the availability of Management Packs. Some of these partners may provide their management packs free of charge, while others may charge you for them. Microsoft merely provides a portal to those partners and their management pack downloads. Microsoft requires that the partners listed on this website follow some best practices for management pack development, such as ensuring the packs are not collecting too much data, and that they have the same look and feel as Microsoft’s own management packs. Notice that you can also sort the results list by product name, partner name, the MOM versions it applies to, and even by the management packs expected RTM date. Besides management packs, Microsoft also lists connectors on this website to connect to other systems such as HP OpenView or Tivoli.
To discuss what you do with a downloaded management pack Slide Builds: 4 Slide Script: [BUILD1] The first thing you do is import a management pack through the MOM administrator console either running on the MOM server or remotely on a workstation. [BUILD2] MOM will then discover where you need a management pack, so if you have SQL Server running on a MOM agent, MOM will know you need to have that management pack on it. [BUILD3] Then MOM will deploy the appropriate management pack to that server, so there is no need to visit any of your managed nodes just to install a management pack on them. [BUILD4] The MOM agents running on those managed nodes will then download all the rues in the management pack and begin monitoring. The rules are what implements all of the MOM monitoring behavior, and this includes the proactive and reactive monitoring activity. So the rules will dictate what to watch for in terms of problem indicators, and what key functionality to verify. Slide Transition: Let’s talk about how you can use low privileges for MOM operations. [BUILD2] The MOM Agent service may run as Local System, but there is also an action account and you can configure that action account with specific rights. Most management packs support monitoring using a low privilege action account. [BUILD3] Each of the management pack guides that you get with the downloaded management packs, document the MOM action account right requirements for monitoring their particular system or application. It really monitors the health and availability of your Active Directory. For example, it monitors key processes and services which may be required such as the NetLogon service, the File Replication Service and the Key Distribution Center service (KDC). It will also monitor replication, so you can instill changes on domain controllers and then time how long they take to replicate between domain controllers. There is also a Client Side Monitoring component which allows you to nominate workstations or servers on which to test aspects of Active Directory from the client’s perspective. You can view your Active Directory topology using the Diagrams view and here you will see your sites, site-links and domain controllers in a graphical representation. To describe the new Windows Desktop Base OS management pack Slide Builds: 5 Slide Script: You may be wondering why you should monitor desktops. [BUILD1] This management pack isn’t designed to monitor every desktop in your environment. It’s really designed for mission critical desktop computers running Windows XP Professional. Essentially it monitors the performance and availability of Microsoft Windows Desktop Operating Systems versions Windows XP and later. By detecting, alerting on, and automatically responding to critical events and performance indicators, this Management Pack helps indicate, correct, and prevent possible Operating System service outages. By creating a specific Desktop management pack instead of using the Server pack, Microsoft has reduced the amount of data that is collected, and therefore put less load on the desktop. [BUILD2] The pack monitors key desktop health areas, such as key services like the Workstation service and the Time service. It also monitors storage components to see if you are running out of disk space, and it can collect various pieces of performance data if you enable those settings, many of which are disabled by default. [BUILD3] The pack comes with a few built-in administrative tasks to help reduce your time spent supporting your mission critical desktops. Tasks include using IPConfig and Ping utilities, starting a Remote Desktop session and running Event Viewer and Computer Management consoles remotely on your desktops. [BUILD4] By using embedded expertise, this Management Pack highlights performance, health, and availability conditions that might indicate problems. It can in some cases even identify issues before they become critical thus providing you with a level of customer responsiveness that increases the overall availability and performance of your Windows Desktop Operating Systems. [BUILD5] The management pack supports up to 4000 desktops per management group. Slide Transition: Let’s look at the Windows Desktop Base OS Management Pack in more detail. By detecting and providing alerts for critical events and performance indicators, this Management Pack helps you correct and prevent possible service outages. As a result, this Management Pack can play an important role in ensuring that Virtual Server and virtual machines are available and working correctly. [BUILD2] And again, by using embedded expertise, this Management Pack provides alerts for performance, health, and availability conditions that indicate problems. In some cases it can even identify issues before they become critical, allowing you to maintain a high level of availability and performance for Virtual Server and your virtual machines. [BUILD3] The management pack comes with some built-in administrative tasks, so that you can start, pause, stop or save the state of your virtual machines. [BUILD4] It also comes with several Virtual Server reports to view all virtual machine details as well as performance history data such as CPU usage, and disk space and RAM used. It will check the health of your DFS roots and DFS links and can check the availability of those links. [BUILD2] In addition to monitoring the health of the DFS service the Management Pack can also help monitor the availability of DFS shares to clients through its Client Side monitoring node. [BUILD3] The DFS management pack also comes with a few administrative tasks for stopping and starting the DFS service and also a task to run a query against DFS roots, links and targets for information. [BUILD4] The two reports that come with it allow you to view the Stand Alone Root and Domain Root configuration information. [BUILD5] This management pack is one the Microsoft packs that requires an external utility. This one requires the dfsutil tool, which is available on the Windows Support Tools CD. To summarize, by detecting, alerting on, and automatically responding to critical events and performance indicators, this Management Pack helps indicate, correct, and prevent possible DFS service and share outages. This Management Pack plays an important role in ensuring that your DFS infrastructure is working correctly and is always available. Slide Transition: Now let’s look at the FRS management pack. Ultrasound scripts run on an Ultrasound controller and forward health metric information on to MOM, so rather than MOM doing all the work, it uses the output from Ultrasound to raise the alerts. [BUILD2] This pack will check the health and availability of replica sets, the FRS service, and the health of Ultrasound. [BUILD3] It comes with some basic administrative tasks for starting and stopping FRS and Ultrasound services, [BUILD4] and some basic reports for frequently detected issues for the Ultrasound service. To summarize, the Windows File Replication Service Management Pack monitors the performance and availability of Windows File Replication Service, Ultrasound, and Replica Sets. By detecting and providing alerts for critical events and performance indicators, this Management Pack helps you correct and prevent possible service outages. This Management Pack plays an important role in ensuring that Windows File Replication Service, and Replica Sets are available and working correctly. Salud y disponibilidad Rendimiento Tareas administrativas Informes Slide Title: DHCP Server MP Keywords: DHCP Key Message: To describe the DHCP Server management pack Slide Builds: 4 Slide Script: The Microsoft Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol service, or DHCP, Management Pack collects the events that the DHCP service places in the Windows 2000 and Windows 2003 System event logs. This Management Pack highlights events that might indicate possible service outages or configuration problems, so that you can quickly take corrective or preventative actions. [BUILD1] For example, this Management Pack alerts you of DHCP service availability, start up failures due to service initialization errors or due to network issues, unexpected service terminations, DHCP scope health, unauthorized DHCP servers and alerts you if DHCP is unable to restore the DHCP database. [BUILD2] It also monitors performance of DHCP traffic such as address requests, offers, ACKs (acknowledgements) and NACKs (negative acknowledgements), and queue lengths. [BUILD3] The management pack comes with lots of administrative tasks, allowing you to run queries on DHCP server and scope configurations, stop and start the DHCP service, and query scope statistics from the DHCP management information base. [BUILD4] The reports available in this management pack include information on DHCP servers, authorized DHCP servers, and plenty of DHCP performance history reports for items such as the active queue length, and declines, discovers, and NACK operations per second.
To describe the Web Sites and Services management pack Slide Builds: 4 Slide Script: [BUILD1] The Web Sites and Services Management Pack can be used to monitor availability and performance of Web sites and services by performing HTTP requests against the monitored entities. These are referred to as synthetic transactions, which are test transactions created by performance management solutions, and are great for monitoring web application performance from the client or customer perspective. [BUILD2] The result of these HTTP requests is a set of performance metrics, such as DNS Response Time, Total URL Response Time and Total Web Page Response Time, (that would include content like images and scripts), which can be collected for future analysis or you can set up monitoring criteria to alert you when certain service level agreements, or SLAs, are not met. [BUILD3] You can then build SLA reports to show upper management and customers how service levels are being met for your web applications. There are a few reports supplied with the management pack. [BUILD4] You should review the Web Sites and Services Management Pack Guide (MomWssMPGuide.doc) for installation and deployment instructions. This document is extracted to a temporary folder when you run the .msi installation file. Slide Transition: Although you don’t need to know the internal structure of the management pack to truly take advantage of its features, it will be useful to understand it for those of you who may to customize the management pack, so let’s take a look at the structure of the Web Sites and Services Management Pack. Slide Comment: Additional Information: Microsoft Operations Manager Web Sites and Services Management Pack Guide (MomWssMPGuide.doc) - This document is extracted to a temporary folder when you run the .msi installation file.
To describe the Web Sites and Services management pack structure Slide Builds: 3 Slide Script: The Web Sites and Services management pack follows a slightly different paradigm for dealing with rules, than other management packs we have seen so far. [BUILD1] When you install the Web Sites and Services Management Pack under the main Web Sites and Services rule group in the MOM Administrator Console, there are two subgroups, (which are referred to as Child Rule Groups), called the Common Processing Rules group and the Request Sequence Groups. [BUILD2] Common processing rules are downloaded and run by all MOM agents that perform any kind of web application monitoring, so all Web Site sand Services agents get these rules. Some of these rules already exist in the MOM Administrator Console and new ones can be added and existing rules can be modified here. [BUILD3] A Request Sequence Group is a collection of Request Sequences which are a series of HTTP requests used to monitor the availability and performance of a particular Web site or Web service. Request Sequence Groups rules differ from the Common Processing Rules in that they are selectively downloaded by MOM agents which perform monitoring for a specific web site, so you may have five MOM agents monitoring five web sites and you may want to dedicate one agent per web site. Also, the rules are modified using the Web Sites and Services MP Configuration Wizard, not the MOM Administrator Console. Slide Transition: Let’s look at how this different rule paradigm in the Web Sites and Services Management Pack fits in with the rest of the MOM 2005 architecture.
Consola Management Server Base de datos Asistente de Configuración Slide Title: Architecture of MOM 2005 with Web Sites and Services MP Keywords: Web Sites and Services, architecture, web sites, web services Key Message: To show the Web Sites and Services management pack in relation to the architecture of MOM 2005 Slide Builds: 0 Slide Script: Typically, a MOM management pack ships with rules that implement the health model for an application. Because with the Web Sites and Services management pack Microsoft are enabling distinct and much larger scenarios, like monitoring generic web applications, they actually ship a configuration wizard and a managed code response along with the rules. The configuration wizard extends the MOM Administrator Console, with the ability to create and configure the new types of rules required for the Web Sites and Services management pack, and the managed code response extends the MOM agent with the ability to perform HTTP requests, and that managed code response also evaluates the performance metrics we discussed earlier, and is responsible for firing off events in the case that those metrics don’t meet their criteria. The slide diagram is only a logical representation of the basic architecture and is by no means intended to suggest a particular deployment environment, because MOM is a distributed application, and you can mix and match any of these MOM components on one or more physical computers. Slide Transition: To clarify this point and look at the Web Sites and Services Management Pack in more detail, let’s start the next demonstration.
