EL IMPERFECTO

We use the imperfect to talk about actions that happened repeatedly in the past. In English we often say “used to” or “would” to express this idea.

Yo jugaba con mi oso de peluche. I used to play with my teddy bear.

It is also talking about past actions when no beginning or end is specified Hacía sol cuando llegamos a la playa.  It was sunny when we got to the beach Is also describes a situation that is interrupted by an event. Imperfect Preterite Yo bailaba cuando tu llamaste. I was dancing when you called.

EXPRESSIONS SUCH AS: generalmente - generaly a menudo – often muchas veces – many times todos los días – every day siempre – always nunca - never  can cue us to use the imperfect.

Here are all the forms of -ar verbs in the imperfect. Notice the accent mark on the nosotros form.

Yo - aba Tú - abas Él Ella aba Ud. Nos. ábamos Vos. abais Ellos Ellas aban Uds. - AR VERBS

CAMINAR (TO WALK) Yo camin aba Tú camin abas Él Ella camin aba Ud. Nos. camin ábamos Vos. camin abais Ellos Ellas camin aban Uds.

Since the yo and the Ud./él/ella forms are the same, we often use the subject pronouns to avoid confusion.

The -ER/-IR verb endings in the imperfect tense.
