In the preterit tense of verbs like oír, leer and creer, the third person forms develop a mysterious “y.”

oír Other verbs follow the same pattern in the preterit. Presente Pretérito oigo oímos oí oyes oíste oye oyen oyó oyeron Other verbs follow the same pattern in the preterit.
