Preterite i > y Spelling Change Verbs Verbs ending in –uir, such as destruir, have a spelling change in the preterite. The i becomes y in the Ud/él/ella and Uds./ellos/ellas forms.

Preterite i > y Spelling Change Verbs Other verbs such as leer, creer, oír, and caerse, follow a similar pattern. In general any –er or –ir verb whose stem ends in a vowel belongs in this group (exception is traer). These verbs also require an accent mark on the first vowel of the ending (-í, -íste, -ímos, -ísteis)
