Use the third person singular form (es) to talk about one person (other than yourself or the person you are talking to) Maria es una amiga. Julio es un amigo.

Use the third person plural form (son) to talk about more than one person (not including yourself or the person you are talking to) Maria y Julio son estudiantes. Marta y Juana son amigas.

If the subject includes “yo,” use the “nosotros” for of “ser” Javier y yo somos amigos Ella y yo somos compañeros de clase.
