A direct object is the object that directly receives the action of the verb.

The direct object answers the question “what?” or “whom?” is receiving the action. For example: Bill has a pen. Bill has it.

A direct object pronoun replaces the direct object noun.

When a direct object noun is a person or pet, it is preceded by the word “a.” – Called the personal a (no English equivalent) – La señora Guzman visita a la doctora Salas. The a is required because the direct object is a person.

In affirmative sentences the D.O.P is placed before the conjugated verb. Yo tengo el libro. –El libro –It –Masculine –Use lo to replace el libro Yo lo tengo.

Tú miras a la maestra. La maestra – Ella – Feminine – Use la – Tú la miras.

Question and Answer When answering question, remember to conjugate verb to apply to you ¿Tienes la tarea de español? – Sí, la tengo. – ¿Traes ropa para practicar deportes? Sí, la traigo.

In negative sentences the D.O.P is placed between no and the conjugated verb. Ex. Yo no traigo la mochila. Yo no la traigo. Carmen no compra los pasajes. Carmen no los compra.

When the verb is an infinitive construction… the DOP is placed before the conjugated form or attached to the infinitive. – Ellos van a escribir unas postales. Ellos las van a escribir. Ellos van a escribirlas. – Lidia quiere ver una pelicula. Lidia la quiere ver. Lidia quiere verla.

1. Tengo el libro. Yo Lo tengo. 2. Voy a comprar la camisa. Voy a comprarla. La voy a comprar. 3. Juan tiene las manzanas. Juan las tiene.
