¿Que te gusta? = What do you like? In English we say we like things: I like ice cream. Subject: I Verb: like Object: ice cream In Spanish we say things please us: Me gusta el helado. Subject: el helado Verb: gusta Object: me Literal translation: “ Ice cream pleases me.”

Gustar = to please Most sentences follow the formula: subject + verb + object. Sentences with the verb gustar follow a reverse formula: object + verb + subject If the subject is a singular noun, then we use gusta. Me + gusta + la pizza. (Pizza pleases me.) If the subject is a plural noun, then we use gustan. Me gustan las papas fritas. (French fries please me.) To say we don’t like something, just put no in front of the object: No me gusta la música rap. (Rap music does not please me.)

To emphasize your likes and dislikes you can add the phrase: A mí A mí me gusta(n)… A mí no me gusta(n)…

¿Que le gusta? To ask or talk about what someone else likes, we use the word “le” in front of gusta or gustan. Le gusta el chocolate. (Chocolate pleases him/her.) We often clarify who we are referring to by adding an additional phrase in front: “A Paco le gusta el chocolate.” A Elena le gustan las papas fritas. A mi hermana le gusta la pizza. A mi hermano le gustan los videojuegos.

Will I use me, te, or le? When forming sentences with gustar, you must make several choices. First, the object pronoun you use indicates the “who” Me gusta la televisión. - I like television. Te gusta la televisión. - You like television. Le gusta la televisión. - He likes television.

Will I use gusta or gustan? Secondly, the form of gustar you use must agree with the subject (or the thing that is doing the pleasing!) Me gusta el chocolate. (singular subject) Me gustan las papas fritas. (plural subject) Te gusta la pizza. Te gustan los deportes. Le gusta el pollo. Le gustan los carros.

Te toca a ti Complete using gusta, gustan, me, te, le: Me _______ la pizza. Me _______ las papas fritas. ¿Te _________ los videojuegos? Le _______ el pollo. Le _______ las hamburguesas. Te __________ los carros. A mi hermano ____ ________ la música rock. A ella _____ ___________ los deportes.
