 Possessive pronouns express ownership or possession.  They are used to avoid repetition of the noun to which they refer. Pronombres posesivos

 The definite article precedes the possessive pronoun, and both article and pronoun agree in gender and number with the noun to which they refer.  Tienes la mochila de Mario?  Sí, tengo la suya y la mía también.

 After the verb ser, the article is usually omitted.  Esa maleta es mía.  To be clearer and more specific, the following structures may be used to replace any corresponding form of el suyo / la suya  la mochila suya  la suya or:  la de usted  yours (singular)  la de él  his  la de ella  hers  la de ustedes  yours (plural)  la de ellos  theirs (masculine, plural)  la de ellas  theirs (feminine, plural)
