Así se forma 1: Possessive adjectives and pronouns Possessive adjectives (mi, tu, su, nuestro/a, su) also have a corresponding form that is used for emphasis. Es mi bolsa It’s my purse. Esa bolsa es mía. That purse is mine. Emphatic possessives are adjectives and must agree in gender (masculine/feminine) and number (singular/plural) with the thing possessed. Those boots are mine. …and when they follow a noun they indicate of mine, of yours, etc. Pero un amigo mío dice que son suyas. But a friend of mine says that they are his. As with su/sus, if the ownership referred to by suyo/a/os/as is not clear from context, you may use an alternate form for clarity. Es su ropa. Es la ropa de él/ella/usted. It’s his/her/your clothing. Esa ropa es de ellos/ellas/ustedes. Those clothes are theirs/yours. Esa ropa es suya. o With the addition of the definite articles el, la, los, or las, the emphatic possessives become emphatic pronouns. —Tengo mi suéter. ¿Tienes el tuyo? —I have my sweater. Verbs whose stems end in j add –eron instead of –ieron. 7

8 The preterit refers to completed actions
Recuerden que se usa el pretérito para expresar las acciones completas: eventos pasados No tuve que trabajar anoche. I didn’t have to work last night (and I didn’t.) Algunos amigos vinieron a visitarme. Some friends came to visit me. Rubén trajo su guitarra. Rubén brought his guitar. 8

9 Verbs that change meaning in the preterit
In the preterit, the verbs saber, querer, and poder convey a slightly different meaning than in the present. saber Supe hacerlo. I found out/ figured out how to do it. querer Quise hablar con ella. I tried to speak with her. no querer Ella no quiso hablar conmigo. She refused to speak with me. poder Pude terminar el proyecto.
