Present Tense Verbs

Infinitive: The verb form listed in the dictionary. In English, the infinitive usually include to: hablar- to talk / trabajar – to work Verbs have a stem and an ending. There are three endings: -ar, -er, -ir. Stem: What is left after you take off the -ar, -er, -ir ending. The conjugation of a verb is the set of forms that indicate who is performing the action. –I speak, he speaks etc.

To conjugate a verb is to produce those forms. Regular verbs are conjugated by adding a given set of endings to the verb stem. Once conjugated in the present tense, the verb has meaning. It can be translated the following ways: Yo trabajo : –I work –I am working –I do work

-ar verb endings -o -as -a -amos -áis -an

hablar- to speak hablo hablas habla hablamos habláis hablan

-er verb endings -o -es -e -emos -éis -en

comer- to eat como comes come comemos coméis comen

-ir verb endings -o -es -e -imos -ís -en

Remember: In a question the Verb comes before the Subject ¿VS? ¿Trabajas tú? ¿Habla español tu mejor amigo? In a statement the subject comes first. SV. Yo trabajo en el centro com. Mi mejor amigo habla español.

jugar – to play (u  ue) juego juegas juegajuegan jugamos jugáis

“jugar” is a stem-changing verb. All that means is there is a change in the stem jug-. The stem-change is u  ue meaning the new stem is jueg- inside of the “boot” Remember to always use a + definite article (el o la) before the name of a sport. Juego al tenis. (a+el = al) To ask what sport someone plays: ¿A qué deporte juegas?

“ir” means to go If you are going to a place (un lugar) you must use: ir + a +definite article a = to(a + el = al) Voy al centro comericial. Vamos a la escuela.
