1 LOS VERBOS IRREGULARES ‘YO’ – 5.2 Pregunta esencial: How do I talk about planning a party using irregular ‘yo’ verbs n the present tense?

2 Repaso – KEY GRAMMAR TERMS  Subject – WHO or WHAT the sentence is about  Felix washes the dishes.  Verb – The action of a sentence. The verb is conjugated according to the subject.  Felix washes the dishes  Conjugate – to change a verb so that it AGREES with the subject.  I sweep. Felix sweeps.

3 Repaso  A verb unconjugated (no subject) is called the INFINITIVE form of the verb  There are three “classes” of infinitives in Spanish: –ar, -er, or -ir  Ejemplo: bailar = to dance envolver = to wrap recibir = to receive  When you conjugate a verb, you add endings according to which “class” of verb it is (ej: hablar takes –ar verb endings while comer takes –er verb endings)

4 To conjugate regular –AR verbs  Yo-o-amosnostoros  Tú-as-áisvosotros  Él/ella/-a-an ellos/ellas/ Usted ustedes

5 Example: Decorar  Yo decoro decoramosnostoros  Tú decoras decoráisvosotros  Él/ella/ decora decoran Ellos/ellas/ Usted ustedes

7 To conjugate regular –IR verbs -o -imos -es-ís -e-en

8 The irregulars!  The following verbs irregular and have unique conjugated forms: (Most are ‘yo-go’ verbs)  Decir – to say/tell  Dar – to give  Poner – to put/place/set  Hacer – to do/make  Salir – to leave  Traer – to bring  Venir – to come

9 DECIR – to say / to tell  Decir has several irregular forms; only vosotros & nosotros is regular  digodecimos  dicesdecís  dicedicen

10 Venir – to come  Venir – ‘yo-go’ verb & stem-changer in the 2 nd and 3 rd person forms (cousins with ‘tener’)  vengovenimos  vienesvenís  vienevienen

11 Salir – to leave / go out  Salir– ‘yo go’  salimos  salessalís  salesalen salgo

12 Poner – to put / place / set  Poner – ‘yo go’  ponemos  ponesponéis  pone ponen pongo

13 Hacer – to do / make  Hacer – ‘yo go’  hacemos  haceshacéis  hace hacen hago

14 Traer – to bring  Traer – ‘yo go’  traemos  traestra éis  trae traen traigo

15 Dar – to give  Dar – ‘yo go’  damos  dasdáis  dadan doy
