El imperfecto del subjuntivo ¡Bienvenidos al pasado, amigos! Pqt. de gramática pg. 1

We use the imperfect subjunctive in the same situations that we use the present subjunctive: use the present subjunctive: -in times of uncertainty and after certain words and expressions. -in times of uncertainty and after certain words and expressions. HOWEVER, the time is the past. When studying the indicative tenses, we do a great deal of work to distinguish between the preterite and the imperfect tenses, ¿no? THIS IS NOT AN ISSUE IN THE SUBJUNCTIVE MOOD, ALL where the imperfect subjunctive refers to ALL actions in the past.

Consider the following two sentences: 1. Espero que Cisco tenga el libro. I hope that Cisco has the book. I hope that Cisco has the book. 2. Esperaba que Cisco tuviera el libro. I hoped that Cisco had the book. I hoped that Cisco had the book. Sentence 1: Present tense main clause trigger, present subjunctive in the subordinate (dependant) clause. Sentence 2: Past tense main clause trigger, imperfect subj. in the subordinate clause.

Looking carefully at the main clause verb is now more important than ever, ¿no?

Formation of the Imperfect Subjunctive PRETERITE 1. Begin with the 3 rd person plural PRETERITE form. -ron 2. Drop the -ron. 3. (used in literature more than common speech) * The accent will fall on the vowel preceding the ending.

Por ejemplo... hablar  hablaron  habla ra comer  comieron  comie ra vivir  vivieron  vivie ra
