The Subjunctive with Nonexistent and Indefinite Lección 5.2 p

MAIN CLAUSE CONNECTOR SUBORDINATE CLAUSE No hay grupo de rap que me guste. There is no rap group that I like. When you want to say that something may not exist, you use the subjunctive:

No hay nadie que quiera alojarse en el albergue. There is nobody who wants to stay at the hostel. MAIN CLAUSE CONNECTOR SUBORDINATE CLAUSE

Expressions that trigger this use of the subjunctive inlcude: No hay...que –There is no (thing) that No hay nadie que –There is nobody that No hay nada que –There is nothing that No hay ningún,ninguno/a...que –There is not any (thing) that

When the subordinate clause of a sentence refers to something (the antecedent) that is known to exist, the indicative is used.

Jenny tiene un trabajo que paga bien. Jenny has a job that pays well. She has the job, she goes there every day, there is no doubt about it.

When the antecedent is uncertain or indefinite, the subjunctive is used.

Jenny busca un trabajo que pague bien. Jenny is looking for a job that pays well. Jenny wants a job that pays well, she doesn’t have it yet, and doesn’t know if or when she will find it.
