Los infinitivos (Infinitives) ¿Qué es un infinitivo? What is an infinitive?

An infinitive is the basic form of a verb (before it has been conjugated). (A verb in it’s original form- it has not been changed!)

In English… Infinitives begin with “to...” Ejemplos: to work to run to write

In Spanish… The infinitive ALWAYS end in… -ar -er -ir or

Some common infinitives are… -AR verbs

Alquilar = to rent Vamos a alquilar un video.

Calificar = to grade El profesor tiene que calificar los exámenes.

Estar = to be El perro va a estar muy triste.

Estudiar = to study Ellos van a estudiar en la biblioteca.

Hablar = to talk Ellos van a hablar.

Jugar = to play El chico va a jugar béisbol.

Limpiar = to clean Ella va a limpiar la casa.

Mirar = to look at Ellos van a mirar la televisión.

Participar = to participate Los niños van a participar en clase.

Pasear = to ride, stroll, take a walk El chico va a pasear en bicicleta.

Practicar = to practice Raúl va a practicar karate.

Preparar = to prepare Mamá va a preparar la comida.

Trabajar = to work El hombre va a trabajar en la oficina.

Viajar = to travel La mujer va a viajar a españa.

-AR Verbs There are MANY other –ar verbs. (This is only a short list to get you started.) You will be responsible for learning these and many more later in the year!

-ER verbs Some common infinitives are…

Comer = to eat Carolina va a comer en el restaurante.

Correr = to run Papá va a correr en el parque.

Hacer = to do, make Elisa va a hacer un pastel.

Leer = to read Ellas van a leer juntas.

Ser = to be La chica va a ser profesora.

Tener = to have La familia va a tener un perro.

Ver = to see Jaime va a ver la película.

Some common infinitives are… -IR verbs

Escribir = to write Yo voy a escribir una carta.

Ir = to go Nosotros vamos al parque.

Salir = to leave, to go out Tú vas a salir con tu familia.

Subir = to go up, climb, or get into Ustedes van a subir al autobús.

Vivir = to live, exist Ellos van a vivir por muchos años.

The infinitive is used to name activities. Notice that in English we often use the –ing form when the Spanish uses the infinitive. Ejemplo: 1.Mis pasatiempos favoritos son jugar fútbol, ver la tele, y leer. (My favorite pastimes are playing soccer,watching tv, and reading.
