Los tiempos compuestos El presente perfecto El pluscuamperfecto

What is a compound tense?  A compound tense uses an auxillary verb and a past participle. First, you need to know how to make a past participle:  For regular verbs, drop the –ar, -er, -ir and add either –ado or –ido.  Ej. hablar (to speak)hablado (spoken)  Ej. comer (to eat)comido (eaten)

Irregular past participles ponerpuestoescribirescrito morirmuertoresolverresuelto freirfritovolvervuelto decirdichoromperroto hacerhechovervisto abrirabierto cubrircubierto descubrirdescubierto

past participles with an accent leerleído creercreído oíroído caercaído traertraído

Putting it all together… In Spanish the auxillary verb has the same meaning as in English (has, have), but the verb used is haber hehemos hashabéis+past participle hahan

Pronombres All pronouns, reflexive or otherwise, must go all the way in front of the verb. Me he cepillado los dientes. Lo he visto.

Practiquemos 1. yo (tener)________________ 2. Rico (poner)________________ 3. nosotros (decir)________________ 4. tú (hacer)________________ 5. ella (hablar)________________ 6. vosotros (beber)________________

Nunca… Write three statements about things that you have done. Two are true and one is a lie.

Looking ahead… Changing the form of haber in front of the past participle changes the tense. He comido.I have eaten. Había comidoI had eaten.

el pluscuamperfecto  This tense tells what someone “had” done; it describes an event that took place before another past event. habíahabíamos habíashabíais+past participle habíahabían

¡A practicar! 1. yo (leer)______________ 2. Raúl (hablar)______________ 3. nosotros (comer)______________ 4. tú (decir)______________ 5. ella (poner)______________
