Forming the Subjunctive Mood

Forming the subjunctive is just like forming formal commands – take the “yo” form of the verb, drop the “-o” at the end, and put an “opposite” ending on the verb: for –ar verbs put “-e” on the end, and for –er or –ir verbs put “-a” on the end. Look at these subjunctive forms of the verb “hacer”. Note that the forms are based on the yo form “hago”: yohaga túhagas Ud./él/ellahaga nosotroshagamos Uds./ellos/ellas hagan

Let’s review the steps again of forming the subjunctive mood in Spanish: 1.Find the “yo” form of the verb 2.Drop the “o” from the ending 3.Put the “opposite” ending on the verb: for –ar verbs put “-e” and for –er or –ir verbs put “-a”

Let’s do some examples. Write the subjunctive form of the given verb. The answer will appear after 10 seconds. Quiero que ella inglés en la clase. (hablar) Él quiere que nosotros en el cuaderno. (escribir) No queremos que tú cuidado. (tener) Tú quieres que yo aquí. (estacionar) escribamos tengas hable estacione

Let’s do some practice. Complete these sentences with the appropriate subjunctive form of the given verb. Quiero que tú _______ mucho para el examen. (estudiar) estudies! That’s right… it’s ponga! Quiero que Juan______ los libros aquí. (poner)

Here’s some more practice. Quiero que nosotros_______ blusas blancas con el uniforme. (llevar) llevemos! That’s right… it’s lea! Quieres que tu mamá te ______ un libro antes de ir a la cama. (leer)

No quieren que Uds.______ en el libro. (escribir) escriban! That’s right… it’s limpie! Papá quiere que yo_______ el coche antes de devolverlo. (limpiar)
