You already know how to make a verb negative in Spanish. How? Just add the word “no” before the verb. Tengo muchos pasatiempos. = I have a lot of pastimes. No tengo muchos pasatiempos. = I don’t have a lot of pastimes. There are other ways to express negativity in Spanish. Some of these you already may know.

Nada = nothing/not anything -¿Qué estás haciendo? - Nada. No tengo nada que hacer. Nunca = never/not ever Yo nunca tejo. Nadie = no one/not anyone/Nadie cose en esta clase. Nobody Ninguna = none/not any¿Cuántas canciones de (feminine noun)los Chipmunks tienes? -¡Ninguna! Ninguna=no/not anyNo hay ninguna luz (feminine adjective, encendida en la casa./ singular)There aren’t any lights turned on in the house.

Ninguno = none/not any ¿Cuántos de Uds. hablan (masculine noun) el árabe? - Ninguno de nosotros. Ningún = not any/noNo tengo ningún amigo (masculine adjective)sueco./I don’t have any Swedish friends. Tampoco = not either No me interesa tejer o coser tampoco.

PLACEMENT Where do these negative words go in the sentence?

1)in front of the verb: Silvia no va al cine. Silvia nunca va al cine. Silvia tampoco va al cine. Nadie va al cine. Tampoco es fácil. (easy) 2) or in combination withno (in front of verb) and the negative word after the verb: Silvia no va al cine nunca. Silvia no va al cine tampoco. No va nadie al cine. No es fácil tampoco.

In English, we can say “I have no money.” You cannot say “Tengo no dinero” in Spanish! No is a response to a question or makes a verb negative; it doesn’t go with a noun! Ninguno and ninguna are used instead of the words “no” or “none.” They are usually used in the singular (you can’t have plural “none”!) and they must agree in gender with the noun they describe.

Ninguno de los equipos ganó. None of the teams won. Ninguna animadora vino a la práctica. No/Not any cheerleaders came to the practice. No tengo ninguna moneda. I don’t have any coins. ¿Coleccionas los pósters? No, no tengo ninguno. Notice singular!

Ninguno changes to ningún when in front of a masculine noun (when it’s an adjective). Ninguna stays the same whether it’s a noun or adjective. Ninguno de mis amigos fue al partido. (NOUN) None of my friends went to the game. Ningún amigo fue al partido. (ADJECTIVE) No friend of mine went to the game. Ninguna de sus amigas es miembro del equipo de basquetbol. (NOUN) Ninguna amiga de Katia es jugadora de baloncesto. (ADJ) No tengo ningún póster en la pared de mi dormitorio. (ADJ)

Nadie takes the “él” form of the verb Nadie va al cine. No va al cine nadie. Use a personal “a” when nadie is a direct object. No conozco a nadie en mi clase de geometría.
