Infinitives in Spanish end in –ar, -er, and – ir The conjugated infinitive is often followed by another infinitive or infinitive phrase/ expression. In a sentence, 2 conjugated verbs canNOT be next to each other ¿Qué desean ustedes tomar? Debes estudiar y aprender más.

Some expressions in Spanish require an extra word between the verb form and the infinitive when followed by the infinitive. Tener que… To have (to do) The word following the first infinitve does NOT translate. If tener is followed by an infinitive, you must put the word que between the form of tener and the infinitive. Tengo que comer algo.

If ir is followed by an infinitive, you must put the word a between the form of ir and the infinitive. Voy a ir a la cafetería. If acabar is followed by an infinitive, you must put the word de between the form of acabar and the infinitive. Yo no. Acabo de comer y no tengo hambre. Ir a To be going (to do) Acabar de To have just (done something)
