The following verbs are found in this chapter…and a few extra ones that you already know as they are very common and useful. Clip art is added where needed. They are a “family” of verbs. They are a “family of regular present tense verbs”. That means that the conjugations are predictable. They all do the same thing. Drop the AR, ER or IR of the infinitive, and add the ending that you need for your subject.

Tú hablas bien. ¿Qué hablan ellos (ellas)? Ella no habla inglés. ¿Quién habla? ¿Quiénes hablan?

Additional things to keep in mind for Capítulo 1A about some verbs.

First, remember the present tense indicative conjugation of SER. SER is an irregular verb, that is to say SER does not follow any given pattern, and it has to be memorized.  For additional practice with SER, visit www.phschool.com/foreign_languages/ , and use web code jdd-0002.

Ana es de España. Ella es española. Roberto is tall and handsome. = Ana is tall and very pretty. = Ana is from Spain. She is Spanish. = We (mas.) are from Cuba. We are Cuban. = Roberto es alto y guapo. Ana es alta y muy bonita. Ana es de España. Ella es española. Nosotros somos de Cuba. Nosotros somos cubanos.

Second, the verb DAR (to give) is an irregular verb in the present indicative. Like SER, it has to be memorized. 

dar – to give;dar un discurso – to give a speech (a lecture)     singular   plural 1ª I yo We nosotros nosotras 2ª You tú vosotros vosotras 3ª He She It usted él ella (no translation) They Ustedes ellos ellas doy damos das dais da dan

Third, CONOCER is a “vowel CER verb”. This is another “family of verbs”. In this family, the first person singular (yo) of the present tense indicative will end in ZCO. All of these verbs do this, therefore, another “family of verbs”.

conocer – to know (a person, a place)     singular   plural 1ª I yo We nosotros nosotras 2ª You tú vosotros vosotras 3ª He She It usted él ella (no translation) They Ustedes ellos ellas conozco conocemos conoces conocéis conoce conocen

Nosotros no conocemos Madrid. I know Juan. = I know Atlanta. = We don’t know Madrid. = Do you (Ud.) know Madrid? = She knows the Mall of Georgia. = Yo conozco a Juan. Yo conozco Atlanta. Nosotros no conocemos Madrid. ¿Conoce Ud. Madrid? Ella conoce el Mall of Georgia.

Lastly, verb conjugations, along with the vocabulary that you have learned and will learn, are the basis of the Spanish II year. These 2 components of the language will enable you to be successful in doing all of your assignments this year. Understanding the verb tense conjugations and vocabulary will be essential for success at the Spanish III level as this will be your foundation for Spanish III and beyond. STUDY and PRACTICE!!!
