3 1. –AR verbs 2. –ER verbs and 3. –IR verbs To review, in Spanish there are 3 classes of verbs: You have already learned the –AR verb endings and how to use them. And now, let’s get started with the –ER verbs.

5 Every verb has 2 parts: Beber = beb- Comer = com- Correr = corr- Leer = le- Aprender = aprend- Vender = vend- Comprender = comprend- Creer = cre- STEM+ENDING + ER

7 To form the present tense: STEM + Verb ending -o-es-e-emos-éis-en

8 Por ejemplo…: comer comer comcomcomcomcomcomererererereroeseemoséisen First, drop off the –ER ending and then add on the new ending.

9 The -ar endings and the –er endings are the same except the letter “a” changes to an “e”. This is because the theme vowel of an –ar verb is “a” and the theme vowel of an –er verb is an “e”. 12 Remember: Present tense verbs in Spanish can have several English equivalents. Each simple expression in Spanish may convey three different ideas in English: Leo el libro. (yo) I read the book.
