What is the subjunctive? 3 Moods in Spanish: 1) indicative – facts, acts, certainty present/preterite/imperfect/perfect tenses 2) imperative – commands 3) subjunctive – wishes, emotions, requests, doubt present/preterite/imperfect/perfect tenses

 It’s a way to talk about things that we wish or want to happen, or are uncertain about. Examples: I would eat more vegetables if I were you. It’s good that you eat lots of vegetables.  It’s based on the negative command formation. What is the subjunctive?

Formation of Present Subjunctive 1. Empieza con la forma “yo”del presente 2. Quita la “o” 3. Añade la terminación opuesta -AR -e-emos -es-éis -e-en -ER/-IR -a-amos -as-áis -a-an

???  What are the three moods?  Why do you use the subjunctive?  How do you form the subjunctive?

La forma You need: 1. Two subjects (ex. yo & tú). 2. A conjunction holding it together: que, quien, como 3. Two verbs; one is a verb of want, emotion, or doubt. If you have all 3 conditions, then your verb in dependent clause should be in the subjunctive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Subject 1 + verb 1 + que + subject 2 + verb 2 (Main clause) (Dependent Clause)

Some common subjunctive indicators  Recomiendo que…
