11 The Pharisees saw this and said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 12 Jesus heard this and said, “Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do.

Reflections on Matthew 9: Reflexiónes en Mateo 9: by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. June 8, 2008 Today is the Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. In the Book of the Prophet Hosea, the Lord speaks: “As certain as the dawn is his coming” (Hosea 6:3). “He will come to us as the showers, as the spring rains that water the earth.” “It is love (mercy) that I desire, says the Lord, not sacrifice.” (Hosea 6:6). Today is a good time to examine how the Lord comes, and how to decide to follow him.

Hoy es el Décimo Domingo de Tiempo Ordinario. En el Libro de Ósea, el Señor dice: “Tan cierto como alba es su venida” (Ósea 6:3). “Y vendrá a nosotros como la lluvia de primavera, que riega la tierra.” “Porque es amor lo que yo deseo, dice el Señor, y no el sacrificio” (Ósea 6:6). Hoy es buen tiempo para examinar como viene el Señor, y como decidir a seguirlo.

Saint Ignatius Loyola says there are three times when a correct and good choice of a way of life may be made (Spiritual Exercises #175). San Ignacio Loyola dice que hay tres momentos para hacer buenas decisiones para un cambio de vida (Ejercicios Espirituales #175).

The First Time or moment is when God our Lord so moves and attracts the will that a devout soul without hesitation, or the possibility of hesitation, follows what has been manifested to it. St. Paul and St. Matthew acted thus in following the Christ Our Lord. We see that Jesus saw Matthew sitting at the tax office; and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him (Matthew 9:9).

El Primer Momento es cuando Dios Nuestro Señor, de tal manera nos mueve y atrae la voluntad, que una alma devota, sin detenerse, o sin la posibilidad de detenerse, sigue lo que se le ha manifestado. San Pablo y San Mateo actuaron así en seguir a Cristo Jesús. Vemos que el Señor vio a Mateo sentado en su oficina de recaudador de impuestos. Y Jesús le dijo: “Sígueme.” Y él se levantó y lo siguió (Mateo 9:9).

St. Paul in the Acts of the Apostles falls to the ground when he sees a light from heaven (Acts 9:3). “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? And Saul asks: “Who are you, Lord?” And he said: “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.” In (Acts 9:18), Saul arose and was baptized as Paul.

San Pablo en los Hechos de los Apóstoles cayo a la tierra cuando vio a una luz del cielo (Hechos 9:3). Oyó una voz que le decía: “Saúl, Saúl, ¿porque me persigues? Y Saúl pregunto: “¿Quién eres tú, Señor?” Y le dijo: “Soy Jesús, a quien tu persigues.” En (Hechos 9:18), Saúl se levantó, y fue bautizado como Pablo.

In both of these cases there are no ifs, buts, or maybes. It is very simple. They know it is the Lord calling them. They get up immediately, and follow him. En estos dos casos, no hacen ningúna condicion, ni pero, ni quizás que si, ni quizás que no. Es muy sencillo. Saben que es el Señor que les esta llamando. Se levantan inmediatamente, y lo siguen.

The Second Time or moment, says St. Ignatius Loyola, is when there is much light and understanding derived through the experience of desolations and consolations and discernment of diverse spirits (Spiritual Exercises #176).

El Segundo Momento o tiempo, dice San Ignacio Loyola, para hacer una buena decisión, es cuando hay mucha luz y entendimiento derivado por la experiencia de desolación y consolación y discernimiento de espíritus (Ejercicios Espirituales #176).

This may take a long time, maybe months, maybe years, to arrive at a clear discernment and a strong resolution to follow God as a result of what you have gone through. A good example of this is St. Ignatius, who was a soldier. He was injured in battle, and it took nine months to convalesce, to heal. That is where he received his call.

Esto puede tomar algún tiempo, quizás meses, quizás años, para llegar a un discernimiento claro y una resolución fuerte para seguir a Dios, por razón de la experiencia que has tenido. Un buen ejemplo de esto es San Ignacio, que fue soldado. Recibió una herida grave en la batalla, y le tomó nueve meses para convalecer, para sanar. Allí fue cuando recibió su llamada.

The Third Time or moment when God calls is in time of tranquility. “One considers first for what purpose man is born, that is, for the praise of God our Lord and for the salvation of his soul. With the desire to attain this before his mind, he chooses as a means to this end a kind of life or state within the bounds of the Church that will help in the service of his Lord and in the salvation of his soul. This is a time of tranquility, that is, a time when the soul is not agitated by different spirits, and has free and peaceful use of its natural powers” (Spiritual Exercises # 177).

El Tercer Momento o tiempo en el cual Dios llama, es en tiempo de tranquilidad. “Uno considera primero por cual propósito el hombre es nacido, es decir, por la alabanza de Dios nuestro Señor y por la salvación de su alma. Con el deseo de obtener esto en tu mente, escoge como un medio a este fin, un estado de vida dentro de la Iglesia que será una ayuda en el servicio de su Señor y para la salvación de su alma. Este es en tiempo de tranquilidad, es decir, en tiempo en lo cual el alma no está agitada por diferentes espíritus, y esta libre y en paz usando sus poderes naturales (Ejercicios Espirituales #177).

If a choice of a way of life has not been made in the First and Second time, then go to the Third Time. Here there are two ways to make a good and correct choice. The first way consists in begging the Lord to deign to move your will. Weigh the advantages and disadvantages of a given decision. Then make the decision (Spiritual Exercises #181).

Si una decision no se ha hecho dentro del Primer o Segundo Tiempo, procede al Tercer Tiempo. Allí hay dos modos para hacer una buena y correcta decisión. El primer modo consiste en rogar al Señor que se digne mover tu voluntad. Luego considera las ventajas y las desventajas de tal y cual decisión. Entonces se hace la decisión (Ejercicios Espirituales #181).

A second way (within the Third Time) is to represent to yourself a man whom you have never seen or known, and whom you would like to see practice all perfection. Consider what advice you would give him. Then apply that advice to yourself. That will be your decision (Spiritual Exercises #185).

El segundo modo (dentro del Tercer Tiempo), consiste en representar a sí mismo a un hombre que jamás haz visto o conocido, y quien tú quisieras verlo practicar toda perfección. Considera que consejo le darías. Luego aplica ese cosejo a ti mismo. Eso será tu decisión. (Ejercicios Espiritales #185).

You could also consider what procedure or norm of action you would wish to have followed in making the present choice if you were at the moment of death. Guide yourself by this and make your decision in conformity with it (Spiritual Exercises #186).

También podrías considerar que procedimiento o norma de acción tu quisieras haber seguido al hacer la presente decisión si estuvieras al momento de la muerte. Guía a ti mismo por esto y haz tú decisión en conformidad a ello (Ejercicios Espirituales #186).

Or, you could picture yourself as standing in the presence of your Judge the Lord, on the last day, and reflect what decision you would then wish to have made. Make the decision that will then fill you with happiness and joy (Spiritual Exercises #187).

O, pon en tu mente una imagen de sí mismo de pie ante la presencia del Señor, tu Juez, en el último día, y reflexiona que decisión quisieras entonces haber hecho. Haz la decisión que en esos momentos te llenara de gozo y felicidad (Ejercicios Espirituales # 187).
