The past subjunctive is used in much the same way as the present subjunctive, but it refers to past actions. The forms of the past subjunctive are based on the third-person plural (Uds., ellos/as) forms of the preterite. Take off the –ron of the verb form and you are left with the stem of the past subjunctive. third-person plural preterite formspast subjunctive stems hablaron→habla- comieron→comie- escribieron→escribie- durmieron→durmie- leyeron→leye- dijeron→dije- fueron→fue-
