GIBRALTAR BILINGUALISM By Isaac David Benhaimoud

GIBRALTAR Gibraltar is a British colony in the south of Spain. It´s got borders with Spain and the Mediterranean Sea. It measures 7km ² and has a population of 30,000 people. It forms part of the UK since 1713 with the signing of the Treaty of Utrecht. It is important as a port and financial and tourist center.

LANGUAGE English is the official language of Gibraltar but Spanish is too widespread due to the closeness with Spain. Also is spoken “llanito” which is a mixture of the Rock English and Andalusian Spanish. Besides Gibraltarians are able to speak English and Spanish at the same time without difficulty.

EXAMPLES Llanito: Hombre, I'm telling you que no puedes... Español: Hombre, te digo que no puedes... Inglés: Man, I'm telling you (that) you can't... Llanito: Hay un call pa ti. Español: Tienes una llamada. Inglés: There's a call for you. Llanito: Sí, pero at the end of the day... Español: Sí, pero a fin de cuentas... Inglés: Yes, but at the end of the day...
