In this presentation we will review the two patterns for verb conjugations that we have learned.

PART 1 Using forms of gustar and encantar

GUSTAR and ENCANTAR behave differently from other ar, er and ir verbs.

Like all -ar verbs, the endings are -o-amos -as-áis -a-an

Notice that you are using only the -a and -an endings! Notice that you are using only the -a and -an endings!

Example: I like milk. Me gusta la leche. Really means: Milk is pleasing to me.

Milk is the subject and because it is singular, gustar is used in the 3rd person singular! Me gusta la leche.

One more thing: Notice that you need to use the definite article after GUSTAR: Me gusta la leche.

1. Write a sentence on the front of your worksheet: I like lemonade. Check your answer on the next slide.

Me gusta la limonada.

2. Write a sentence: I like lemonade a lot.

Me gusta mucho la limonada.

3. Write a sentence: I don’t like lemonade at all.

No me gusta nada la limonada.

Example: I like sausages. Me gustan las salchichas. Really means: Sausages are pleasing to me.

Don’t forget: You need to use the definite article after GUSTAR: Me gustan las salchichas.

Sausages is the subject and because it is plural, gustar is used in the 3rd person plural! Me gustan las salchichas.

4. Write a sentence: I like bananas.

Me gustan los plátanos.

5. Write a sentence: I don’t like bananas.

No me gustan los plátanos.

6. Write a sentence: I like bananas a lot. Emphasize I by using the expression “a mí”

A mí me gustan mucho los plátanos.

7. Write a sentence: I like bacon and eggs for breakfast.

A mí me gustan el tocino y los huevos en el desayuno.

Notice that you are using only the -a and -an endings of GUSTAR! Other endings are possible, but not usual!

ENCANTAR behaves the same as GUSTAR, except instead of “like” it means “love.”

Me encanta la leche. I love milk. Milk is delightful to me.

8. Write a sentence: He loves pizza. Pablo loves pizza.

Le encanta la pizza. (A Pablo) le encanta la pizza. Le encanta la pizza (a Pablo).

9. Write a sentence: I love strawberry yogurt.

A mí me encanta el yogur de fresa.

10. Write a sentence: We love hamburgers for lunch.

A nosotros nos encantan las hamburguesas en el almuerzo.

11. Write a sentence: Ana loves toasted bread and orange juice for breakfast.

A Ana le encantan el pan tostado y el jugo de naranja en el desayuno.

Remember to look at the thing that you like/love to decide whether to use the -a or -an endings!

PART 2 Conjugating -ar, -er and -ir verbs

Regular -ar verbs -o-amos -as-áis -a-an

Replace the ending of the verb to match the subject:. yonosotros túvosotros él, ella, Ud.ellos/as, Uds.
