There is no reason to say that these two commandments are equal There is no reason to say that these two commandments are equal. Jesus always placed obedience and love to God the Father first, and love of neighbor second. If you make them equal, chances are you will eliminate one or the other. Jesus said: “You cannot serve God and mammon” (Matthew 6:24).

And it needs to be said that one does not love a neighbor simply as a means of loving God. We are to love the other person for his own sake. Jesus in the story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:30 ff) has him render aid to the one fallen among thieves solely in response to his needs.

He anoints him with oil, binds up his wounds, checks his pain, sets him on his donkey, and puts him in the inn. Furthermore, he pays for his stay, and uses his credit to assure him further aid in his absence.

Again, in Matthew 25:31 ff., Jesus has the judge give the reasons for his judgment: they will be judged in accordance to how they treated their neighbor. “Come, you, blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you… for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty, and you gave me drink, I was a stranger, and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison, and you came to me.”

En otra ocasión, en Mateo 25:31, Jesús propone al juez dando sus razones por sus juzgamientos: serán juzgados conforme hayan tratado a su prójimo. “Venid, benditos de mi Padre, hereden el reino preparado para ustedes... porque tuve hambre y me dieron de comer, tuve sed y me dieron de beber, era forastero y me recogieron, estuve desnudo y me vistieron, enfermo y me visitaron, estuve en la cárcel y fueron a verme.”

Even though their actions were, strictly speaking, for those in need, they will be acceptable. “Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of my brethren, you did it to me.” Service to God does not mean you retreat into a paradise of spirituality, meditation, or adoration, only to ignore those who are in need.

Rather you retreat only to allow the Lord to make you stronger when you come out, so that you can be freed from disordered affections, and be ready to serve those in need, which is the test of our love.

And who is our neighbor? The word itself suggests someone very close, right next to us. It is not a phantom. It is not necessarily someone distant. We live in a global village, and we find the poor always with us.

St Ignatius Loyola reminds us we must not fail to accomplish that which is within our grasp. It is the way of the Enemy to put before our eyes that which is far from us, so that we never get anything done. And we must never put off good works, however insignificant they may be, in the expectation of undertaking more important ones at another time.
