Your child will be exposed to many types of writing this year, but we will be focusing on narrative and expository writing. Here’s what you need to know: Character-problem-solution narratives focus on a main character who is thrust into a struggle or problem of some kind. The writer’s purpose is to entertain his or her readers. Personal-experience narratives focus on the setting or experience of a character. There is no problem in the story, so the author uses descriptive language to hold the reader’s attention. Expository writing’s purpose is to give information to an audience about a topic. It has an introduction, body and conclusion. Students will be working on spelling words that are on their spelling development level. Each day, students will need to practice with their word sort words. They will have approximately 2 weeks to practice the words before their quiz. Math/Science Writing Word Work Reading Our goal for all students this year is that they become even better readers. Mrs. Bartels and Ms. Davies know that to meet this goal, voracious reading is necessary; therefore, we expect all 4 th graders to read at least 40 books this school year between home and school. Although we’ve also set expectations about trying out a variety of genres to develop their “reading personalities,” students will select most of their own books using IPICK. We are off to a great start in math. We have learned to read, write, and expand numbers. Coming up are addition, subtraction, and multiplication. Please work with your child on his or her facts through 10 x 10. Matter, matter everywhere! We are learning about the physical properties of matter. Next up—forms of energy! Social Studies This year we will be learning about Texas history. We have started our year by learning about the regions of Texas. Dreambox.com is a fun, interactive math program that we use at school. It is also available as an app in the Apple store. The user ID and password are your child’s six-digit student ID number. Please have your child spend at least minutes each night building his or her math skills. Mathplayground.com is another website that has math games and videos to help reinforce math skills. Fun in Fourth October Bartels, Bucalo, Davies, Geyer

Cuarto Divertido Octubre Bartels, Bucalo, Davies, Geyer
