Mateo 3: En aquel tiempo, comenzó Juan el Bautista a predicar en el desierto de Judea, 2 diciendo: “Conviértanse, porque ya está cerca el Reino de los cielos”. 3 Juan es aquel de quien el profeta Isaías hablaba, cuando dijo: Una voz clama en el desierto: Preparen el camino del Señor, enderecen sus senderos.

4 Juan usaba una túnica de pelo de camello, ceñida con un cinturón de cuero, y se alimentaba de saltamontes y de miel silvestre. 5 Acudían a oírlo los habitantes de Jerusalén, de toda Judea 6 y de toda la región cercana al Jordán; confesaban sus pecados y él los bautizaba en el rió. 7 Al ver que muchos fariseos y saduceos iban a que los bautizara, les dijo: “Raza de víboras, ¿quién les ha dicho que podrán escapar al castigo que les aguarda?

8 Hagan ver con obras su conversión 9 y no se hagan ilusiones pensando que tienen por padre a Abraham, porque yo les aseguro que hasta de estas piedras puede Dios sacar hijos de Abraham. 10 Ya el hacha está puesta a la raíz de los árboles, y todo árbol que no dé fruto, será cortado y arrojado al fuego. 11 Yo los bautizo con agua, en señal de que ustedes se han convertido; pero el que viene después de mí, es mas fuerte que yo, y yo ni siquiera soy digno de quitarle las sandalias. Él los bautizara en el Espíritu Santo y su fuego.

12 Él tiene el bieldo en su mano para separar el trigo de la paja. Guardará el trigo en su granero y quemara la paja en un fuego que no se extingue”. Palabra del Señor

Matthew 3: In those days John the Baptist appeared, preaching in the desert of Judea 2 and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand ! ” 3 It was of him that the prophet Isaiah had spoken when he said: “A voice of one crying out in the desert, ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.’ ”

4 John wore clothing made of camel's hair and had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. 5 At that time Jerusalem, all Judea, and the whole region around the Jordan were going out to him, 6 and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River as they acknowledged their sins. 7 When he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?

8 Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance. 9 And do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you, God can raise up children to Abraham from these stones. 10 Even now the ax lies at the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

11 I am baptizing you with water, for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is mightier than I. I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 12 His winnowing fan is in his hand. He will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.” Gospel of the Lord

Reflections on Matthew 3: Reflexiones en Mateo 3: by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. Dec. 8, 2013 In this Second Sunday of Advent, John the Baptist preaches to prepare for the kingdom that is at hand. We need to prepare for the One whom our heart has been waiting for.

En este Segundo Domingo de Adviento, Juan Bautista predica: Hay que prepararnos para el reino de los cielos que ya está cerca. Necesitamos prepararnos para la venida de aquél quien ha estado esperando nuestro corazón.

Since the kingdom of heaven is within you (Luke 17:21) this means that it is within that we prepare first. It is that close. You don’t have to go very far away. It is within your grasp. It has to do with the purification of your inner being, your soul, and your heart. “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart” (Deuteronomy 6:5).

Siendo que el reino de los cielos esta dentro de ti (Lucas 17:21), quiere decir que la preparación será primeramente interior. Tan cerca así está. No tienes que ir muy lejos. Está dentro de tu alcance. Tiene que ver con la purificación de tu ser interior, tu alma, tu corazón. “Amarás a tu Dios con todo tu corazón” (Deuteronomio 6:5).

All the prophets and John made a way and prepared it beforehand. What was special about John the Baptist was that he was the greatest of the prophets. His role was to point out Jesus from among the crowd. When he shared his gift of discernment with us, he saved us a lot of time.

Todos los profetas y Juan hicieron un camino y lo prepararon antemano. Lo especial de Juan Bautista fue que era el más grande de los profetas. Su función fue de indicar a Jesús de entre el gentío. Él compartió su don de discernimiento con nosotros. Nos ahorra mucho tiempo cuando andamos buscando al Señor.

Some spend much time looking for love in all the wrong places, and hesitate to make up their minds as to whom they are going to love and follow. This reminds me of the proverbial donkey that can’t make up his mind which to eat as he stands between two bales of hay. He starves to death.

Hay algunos que buscan el amor en todos los lugares malos, y al dilatar su decisión hacia quien amar y servir, sufren hambre y sed. Me recuerda del proverbio del burro que, estando entre dos pacas de alfalfa, no se puede decidir cual comer, y se muere de hambre.

Remember, not to decide is to decide. Procrastination is putting off a decision again and again, until it is too late. Those who suffer this are afraid to make mistakes. It may be they are timid, shy, and afraid. Been there? Done that? Every choice delimits. It eliminates other options. But decide we must. We must decide to follow Jesus!

Hay que recordar que no decidir es decidir. La procrastinación es cuando uno se dilata hacer la decisión necesaria una y otra vez hasta que ya es muy tarde. Los que sufren de esto tienen miedo de hacer errores. Será que son tímidos, vergonzosos, o miedosos. ¿Han estado allí? ¿Han hecho eso? Cada vez que uno hace una decisión se limita uno. Se elimina otra opción. Pero tenemos que hacer decisiones. ¡Hay que decidir a seguir a Cristo!

John tells us the first step is to repent. This means we are going to have to make some changes. The same old stuff just won’t do. Our mental attitude has to change. Prepare to acknowledge your sins. In the Catholic Church we do this and also go to confession. Believe and be baptized. Be immersed in God’s presence. Be converted. Turn to God and produce good fruit as evidence.

Juan nos dice que el primer paso es arrepentirse. Esto quiere decir que tenemos que hacer algunos cambios. Lo de ayer ya no sirve. Nuestra actitud mental tiene que cambiar. Prepárate a reconocer tus pecados. En la Iglesia Católica hacemos esto y también nos confesamos. Cree y bautízate. Hay que sumergirnos en la presencia de Dios. Conviértete. Vuelve a Dios y produce buenos frutos como evidencia.

Jesus told the Samaritan woman we must worship God in spirit and in truth (John 4:24). That means we have to be honest with ourselves. The truth will set us free. He knew she was not exactly accurate when she said: “I have no husband”. Jesus said: “You are right. For you have had five husbands and the one you now have is not your husband.”

Jesús le dijo a la mujer Samaritana que tenemos que dar culto a Dios en espíritu y en verdad (Juan 4:24). Esto quiere decir que tenemos que ser honestos consigo mismos. La verdad nos hará libre. Jesús sabía que lo que ella decía no era exactamente correcto cuando dijo: “No tengo esposo”. Jesus dijo: “Es cierto. Porque has tenido cinco esposos, y el que tienes hoy no es tu esposo.”

Jesus has much to offer. “Whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst; the water that I shall give him will become in him a spring of water welling up into eternal life” (John 4:14). Jesus wants us to level with him. Be honest. Give up your half-truths, and lies, and evil ways.

Jesús tiene mucho que dar. “Cualquiera que tome del agua que yo le daré nunca tendrá sed; porque esa agua se le convertirá dentro de si en una fuente que salta dando una vida sin término” (Juan 4:14). Jesús quiere que seamos honestos con él. Hay que dejar de las medias verdades, las mentiras, y las maldades.

If you can say “I already did that.” Fine. But there is always room for improvement. Could it be that I have grown lazy, or lethargic, or slow in the things of God? That is not worthy of the Lord, is it? One area of concern that comes to my mind is worship.

Y si dices que ya cumpliste con eso, santo y bueno. Siempre hay lugar para mejorarse. ¿ Será que has sido perezoso, o sin animo, o despacioso en las cosas de Dios? Esto no es digno del Señor, ¿verdad?

“Cursed is he who does the work of the Lord with slackness” (Jeremiah 48:10). It is so good to worship regularly with a Christian community of believers. That helps me love God and neighbor better.

Recuerdo a Jeremías 48:10 que dice así: “Maldito aquel que es perezoso en las cosas de Dios”. Hay que ir a Misa regularmente, dando culto con la comunidad de creyentes a la cual pertenezco, para que Dios sea glorificado.

Intellectual conversion could lead us to study more. This could be in our own field of specialization, or the Word of God, or the Lives of the Saints, or the teachings of the Church. What is your charisma, your love-gift? Where has the Lord gifted you?

La conversión intelectual tiene que ver con el uso de la facultad del intelecto. Hay muchos que son gigantes en su profesión, pero enanos en los estudios acerca de las cosas de Dios. No estudian ni la Palabra de Dios, ni la Vida de Los Santos, ni las enseñanzas de la Iglesia. ¿En qué te ha bendecido Dios? ¿Cuál es tu carisma?

The Lord tells us to do everything we do with love (1 Corinthians 16:14). Perhaps we need to work in the area of affectivity. Do we act like drones as we go about our lives? Mechanical. Lifeless. Tired. Too tired to say hello to people and let them know what a delight it is be with them? It is so important to establish a relationship with those we serve.

El Señor nos dice: “Haz todo con amor” (1 Corintios 16:14). Quizás necesitemos mejorar nuestro uso de los afectos. Hay personas cuyo servicio parece producir un sonido sordo. Hacen todo pero a gritos y sombrerazos. Parecen estar siempre cansados, desganados. No saludan, no parece que gozan del deleito del Señor. Es tan importante compartir el gozo del Señor, y así establecer una relación con los demás.

Know their names. Pray with them. Can we wish them love, joy, and happiness? In Brazil Jesuit missionary Fr. Rahm greets everybody with “Jóia (delightful in Portuguese), Alegria ! ” (And a big hug). That’s it. I found It makes a big difference. Sadness leaves, joy comes in. That’s where it’s at! Thank you Fr. Rahm!

Conoce sus nombres. Reza con ellos. Pídele a nuestro Padre Dios que les conceda más amor, más gozo, más alegría. Cambia todo el ambiente cuando hay una persona que está llena del amor de Dios. En Brasil el Padre Jesuita Rahm saluda a todo mundo diciendo; “¡Jóia!,” (deleito en Portugués), “ ¡Alegría! ” (y un abrazo). Encontré que ésto cambia todo. ¡Fuera la tristeza! ¡Así es! ¡Gracias Padre Rahm!

Yes. Jesus has come. And he keeps coming every day in prayer, in the Eucharist, and in our brothers and sisters. And he loves us. And he will come again! Prepare ye, the way of the Lord! What a delight! What joy! What happiness! Glory to God!

Sí. Jesús ha venido. Y sigue viniendo todos los días en la oración, en la Eucaristía, y en los hermanos y hermanas. Jesús nos ama. Y ¡volverá a venir! ¡Preparen el camino del Señor! ¡Qué deleito! ¡Qué gozo! ¡Qué alegría! ¡Gloria a Dios!
