Families in Guatemala are very close, and generally very large. Religion is important to the people of Guatemala. The most practiced religion is Roman Catholic. The Catholic Church doesn’t approve of divorces; therefore the divorce rate is 24 times lower than the marriage rate. In the upper class societies, nannies or the mother care for the children. In the lower class, or rural areas, the older children are responsible for the childcare. Most children usually attend only up to 6 years in school in Guatemala. Many kids never further their education because they are expected to work for the family. The men in the family usually grow crops of different grains, whereas the women only plant fruits and vegetables to sell at local markets. Outside of the home, the men usually do woodworking, carpentry, or bricklaying. It/Guatemala.html

The contribution of refrigeration and the clothing market to Guatemala has helped it greatly. Refrigeration helps farmers better preserve foods, and keeps the nutrients in. Because of refrigeration, farmers can more easily ship their products to countries all over the world. Another contribution to Guatemala that has affected it for the better is the growing clothing market. Many women can work to make clothing, and despite prior beliefs, they get paid fairly well.

There are two main things that people can associate with Guatemala. They are marimbas and coffee. All celebrations and special events that take place in Guatemala include marimbas. Marimbas are easy to make because Guatemala is known to have an abundant amount of the wood needed to make them. Coffee is also very abundant in the country. With the very diverse climate in Guatemala, the country is able to produce seven distinct types of coffee. Soil, rainfall, humidity, temperature, and altitude are all factors that contribute to making Guatemala a great place for growing coffee. Coffee and marimbas are two things in Guatemala that will be products for years to come. Guatemala is known for many things. One symbol that is true to Guatemala is the Quetzal bird. The Quetzal is featured on Guatemala’s national flag. The people of Guatemala find this bird to be very beautiful, and it is said to have been the spiritual protector of the Mayan Chiefs. Poverty is another symbol of Guatemala. It has become an issue over the years because of mass immigration into the country. For many of the people in the country, drinkable water is scare. In the worst parts of the poverty stricken countries, there is very poor sanitation and nutrition. This has lead to sickness throughout the country.

Tropical storm Agatha rushed through Guatemala on May 29, Guatemala and surrounding countries received upwards of 20 inches of water. The tropical storm killed more than a hundred people, and left over 100,000 people homeless. The U.S. government and other aid agencies have donated supplies and money to help fix the damage caused by the storm. I believe that these efforts are helping some, but not enough. Since this disaster didn’t get media coverage like many storms do, I believe that Guatemala isn’t getting as much aid as most places do after big storms.
