Juan 21:1 - 19 1 En aquel tiempo, Jesús se les apareció otra vez a los discípulos junto al lago de Tiberíades, Se les apareció de esta manera: 2 Estaban juntos Simón Pedro, Tomás (llamado el Gemelo), Natanael (el de Caná de Galilea), los hijos de Zebedeo y otros dos discípulos.

3 Simón Pedro les dijo: “Voy a pescar” 3 Simón Pedro les dijo: “Voy a pescar”. Ellos le respondieron: “También nosotros vamos contigo”. Salieron y se embarcaron, pero aquella noche no pescaron nada. 4 Estaba amaneciendo, cuando Jesús se apareció en la orilla, pero los discípulos no lo reconocieron. 5 Jesús les dijo: “Muchachos, ¿han pescado algo?” Ellos contestaron: “No”.

6 Entonces él les dijo: “Echen la red a la derecha de la barca y encontrarán peces”. Así lo hicieron, y luego ya no podían jalar la red por tantos pescados. 7 Entonces el discípulo a quien amaba Jesús le dijo a Pedro: “Es el Señor”. Tan pronto como Simón Pedro oyó decir que era el Señor, se anudó a la cintura la túnica, pues se la había quitado, y se tiró al agua. 8 Los otros discípulos llegaron en la barca, arrastrando la red con los pescados, pues no distaban de tierra mas de cien metros.

9 Tan pronto como saltaron a tierra vieron unas brasas y sobre ellas un pescado y pan. 10 Jesús les dijo: “Traigan algunos pescados de los que acaban de pescar”. 11 Entonces Simón Pedro subió a la barca y arrastró hasta la orilla la red, repleta de pescados grandes. Eran ciento cincuenta y tres y a pesar de que eran tantos, no se rompió la red.

12 Luego les dijo Jesús: “Vengan a almorzar” 12 Luego les dijo Jesús: “Vengan a almorzar”. Y ninguno de los discípulos se atrevía a preguntarle: ¿Quién eres?, porque ya sabían que era el Señor. 13 Jesús se acercó, tomó el pan y se lo dio y también el pescado. 14 Ésta fue la tercera vez que Jesús se apareció a sus discípulos después de resucitar de entre los muertos.

15 Después de almorzar le preguntó Jesús a Simón Pedro: “Simón, hijo de Juan, ¿me amas más que éstos?” El le contestó: “Sí, Señor, tú sabes que te quiero”. Jesús le dijo: “Apacienta mis corderos”. 16 Por segunda vez le preguntó: “Simón, hijo de Juan, ¿me amas?” Él le respondió: “Sí, Señor, tú sabes que te quiero”. Jesús le dijo: “Pastorea mis ovejas”.

17 Por tercera vez le preguntó: “Simón, hijo de Juan, ¿me quieres 17 Por tercera vez le preguntó: “Simón, hijo de Juan, ¿me quieres?” Pedro se entristeció de que Jesús le hubiera preguntado por tercera vez si lo quería y le contestó: “Señor, tú lo sabes todo; tú bien sabes que te quiero”. Jesús le dijo: “Apacienta mis ovejas. 18 Yo te aseguro: cuando eras joven, tú mismo te ceñías la ropa e ibas a donde querías; pero cuando seas viejo, extenderás los brazos y otro te ceñirá y te llevará a donde no quieras”.

19 Esto se lo dijo para indicarle con qué género de muerte habría de glorificar a Dios. Después le dijo: “Sígueme”. Palabra del Señor

John 21:1 - 19 1 After this, Jesus revealed himself again to his disciples at the Sea of Tiberias. He revealed himself in this way. 2 Together were Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, Zebedee's sons, and two others of his disciples.

6 So he said to them, “Cast the net over the right side of the boat and you will find something.” So they cast it, and were not able to pull it in because of the number of fish. 7 So the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord.” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he tucked in his garment, for he was lightly clad, and jumped into the sea. 8 The other disciples came in the boat, for they were not far from shore, only about a hundred yards, dragging the net with the fish.

9 When they climbed out on shore, they saw a charcoal fire with fish on it and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you just caught.” 11 So Simon Peter went over and dragged the net ashore full of one hundred fifty-three large fish. Even though there were so many, the net was not torn.

12 Jesus said to them, “Come, have breakfast 12 Jesus said to them, “Come, have breakfast.” And none of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” because they realized it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came over and took the bread and gave it to them, and in like manner the fish. 14 This was now the third time Jesus was revealed to his disciples after being raised from the dead.

15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” 16 He then said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.”

17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. 18 Amen, amen, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to dress yourself and go where you wanted; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.”

Reflections on John 21:1 - 19 Reflexiones en Juan 21:1 - 19 by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. Apr. 14, 2013 Here we see that Jesus once again appears to the Apostles at the Sea of Tiberias. He reveals himself in this way. (Remember that to reveal means to remove the veil). Jesus is removing the veil from the mystery of God, so that we have access to his power. St. Paul prayed “that we may experience the power of his resurrection” (Philippians 3:10). He shows us that God is love, and has the power to appear wherever he wants to, and to whomever he chooses. And he can produce a miraculous catch of fish any day.

Aquí vemos una vez vemos una vez mas que Jesús se aparece a los Apóstoles en el Mar de Tiberiades. Se revela de esta manera. (Recuerden que revelar quiere decir remover el velo). Jesús esta removiendo el velo del misterio de Dios, para que tengamos acceso a su poder. San Pablo rezo “que conozcamos el [poder de su resurrección” (Filipenses 3:10). Manifiesta que Dios es amor, y tiene el poder de aparecerse dondequiera y quienquiera que Él escoja. Y Él puede producir una pesca milagrosa cualquier día.

Once again we see that Peter was a strong leader Once again we see that Peter was a strong leader. He did not just withdraw and sulk and moan and groan after his faults. He knew he was a sinner, yet he did not give up. This shows his resiliency. The rest of us would benefit to do likewise. He arose and said: “I am going fishing.” The others immediately join him: “We also will come with you.” They went out and got into the boat and labored all night, yet, they caught nothing. Indeed, Jesus had said: “Without me you can do nothing” (John 15.5).

Jesus knew where they were. And he knew they had had nothing to eat Jesus knew where they were. And he knew they had had nothing to eat. He knew they had caught nothing even after working all night. He decides to intervene, even when they had not asked for help. Notice the word he uses to call them. “Children, have you caught anything to eat?” They answered him, “No.” So he says, “Cast your net over the right side of the boat.” They listen, and immediately they catch an enormous amount of fish. The word of the Lord came true. If we abide in him we bear much fruit (John 15.5).

Jesús sabia donde estaban. Y sabia que no habían tenido nada que comer Jesús sabia donde estaban. Y sabia que no habían tenido nada que comer. Él sabia que no habían pescado nada, aunque trabajaron toda la noche. Se decidió intervenir, aunque no habían pedido ayuda. Noten la palabra que uso al llamarlos. “Hijitos, ¿tenéis algo de comer? Le respondieron: No. Él les dijo: Echad la red a la derecha de la barca, y hallareis. Entonces la echaron, y ya no la podían sacar, por la cantidad de peces tan enorme” (Juan 21: 5-6). Así se cumplió la palabra del Señor: “Si permaneces conmigo, daran mucho fruto” (Juan 15:5).

The beloved disciple cries out: “It is the Lord The beloved disciple cries out: “It is the Lord.” The one who loves knows when the Lord is near. He is the one who informs Peter. Peter tucks his garment, jumps into the sea. They go to Jesus, who has breakfast ready for them. “Come, have breakfast” he says (John 21:12). First things first, they feed their bodies, then comes a huge lesson for their souls. (Grace builds on nature).

El discípulo amado clama: “¡Es el Señor El discípulo amado clama: “¡Es el Señor!” El que ama sabe cuando el Señor esta cerca. Él es el que informa a Pedro. Pedro se ciño la ropa, y se hecho al mar. Ellos fueron con Jesús, que les tenia el almuerzo listo. “Vengan, y coman” (Juan 21:12). Primeramente les alimenta sus cuerpos, y luego viene una gran lección para sus almas. (La gracia finca sobre la naturaleza).

Jesus then says to Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me (Greek word: agapas me) more than these others?” (John 21:15). Peter answers, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you” (Greek word: philo se). Jesus answers: “Feed my lambs.” Jesús entonces le dice a Pedro: “Simón, hijo de Juan, me amas (en Griego: ágapas me) mas que estos?” (Juan 21:15). Pedro contesta: “Si Señor, tu sabes que te amo” (en Griego: philo se). Jesús contesta: “Alimenta a mis corderos”.

This is an important switch of words. It does not come through in the English. It meant: “ Do you love me like a brother, with human affection. Note well: it is more than asking: “Do you like me?

Jesús entonces le pregunta la tercer vez: “Simón, hijo de Juan, ¿me amas?” (Esta vez la palabra en Griego que Jesús usa es : phileis me). Este cambio de palabras es importante. Muchos no se fijan en este cambio, y no es obvio en la traducción a otras lenguas. Quiere decir: “Me quieres como un hermano, con afecto humano”. Noten bien, es como preguntar: “¿Me quieres?”

Perhaps it would help you to remember that Philadelphia is the City of Brotherly Love. It stems from the use of that Greek word Jesus used. Quizás te ayude a recordar que la Ciudad de Filadelfia es la Ciudad del Amor Fraternal. Viene del uso de las palabras que Jesús usa.

Jesus in his Last Supper discourse prayed to the Father: “that the love with which you love me, may be in them, and I in them” (John 17:26). This is the highest love imaginable: the love of God the Father for God the Son Jesus. And that love is the Holy Spirit. So this is the good news: God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit loves us.

Jesús en el discurso de su Ultima Cena rezo al Padre: “Que el amor con que tu me amas este en ellos, y Yo en ellos” (Juan 17:26). Este es el amor mas alto que se pueda imaginar: el amor de Dios Padre para su Hijo Jesucristo. Y ese amor es el Espíritu Santo. Entonces esta es la buena noticia: Dios, el Padre, el Hijo y el Espíritu Santo nos ama.

Last week we read John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” La semana pasada leímos Juan 3:16 “Porque Dios tanto amo al mundo que nos dio a su único hijo, para que aquel que creyera en Él no perezca, sino que tenga la vida eterna” .

What Jesus is saying to Peter was : if you are indeed ready to love me like a brother, you are ready to love your brothers and sisters in a responsible way. And John 15:13 says: “Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” Jesus hinted that Peter was called to do just that. You and I are called to do likewise. Yes! Amen! Glory be to God! Aleluya!

Lo que Jesús le esta diciendo a Pedro es esto: si en verdad estas listo para amarme como un hermano, entonces estas listo para amar a tus hermanos y hermanas de una manera responsable. Y San Juan 15:13 dice: “Nadie tiene mayor amor que este, que uno ponga su vida por sus amigos.” Jesús sugiere que Pedro es llamado a hacer precisamente eso. Tu y yo igualmente, somos llamados a hacer lo mismo. ¡Si! ¡Amen! ¡Gloria a Dios! ¡Aleluya!
