La Posesión Ways of expressing possession with adjectives to show that something belongs to someone.

Use of “de” to show possession: Apuntes con el uso de “de”: de = of, to whom it belongs de = ‘s in English and it replaces the apostrophe s because it doesn’t exist in Spanish To express possession with de: (de + person(s)) Ex: los libros de Susana = Susan’s books Ex: la casa de Eduardo y Enrique = Eduardo & Enrique’s house

Questions to ask to whom something belongs: Ex: ¿De quién es la pluma? La pluma es de Miguel Ex: ¿De quién son los libros? Son los libros de Marta y Miguel. *De combines with el to form the contraction del (if used before a masculine noun) Ex: la clase del profesor (de + el profesor = del profesor) Ex: ¿Quién es el director del colegio? Sr. Trummer es el director del colegio.

Practica: ¿De quién es? I. Figure out to whom each item(s) belong: ex: books/Enrique & Lola = Los libros son de Enrique y Lola. 1. Pens / Manuel 2. Ruler / Anita 3. Dictionary / profesor Vega 4. Folders / the girls 5. Pencils / Ana & Lupe

Los adjetivos posesivos: Possessive Adjectives: adjectives that describe to whom something belongs (short version of the use of “de” to define ownership) Gramática: a. like all adjs., these agree in number and gender with the person/thing being possessed, not with the possessor b. they are placed before the noun they modify

Los Adjetivos Posesivos: EnglishSing.Plur. MyMi (libro)Mis (libros) Your (fam)Tu (amiga)Tus (amigas) *His,her,its, theirs Su (casa)Sus (casas) OurNuestro/aNuestros/as

Examples of how poss. adjs. agree with noun and not possessor: mi libro my book mis librosmy books tu plumayour pen tus plumasyour pens *Mi, tu and su do not have masculine and feminine forms. They only have one singular and one plural form. mi amigomi amiga tus hermanostus hermanas su librosus plumas

Su/sus has four meanings: his, her, their and your (formal) (*it agrees with the noun that comes after in number not with the possessor). María busca a su hermana. María is looking for her sister. Juan busca a sus hermanas. Juan is looking for his sisters. Ellos buscan a su hermana. They are looking for their sister. Los estudiantes buscan sus libros. The students are looking for their books.

If the meaning of su is not clear from the context of the sentence, su/sus may be clarified with de + person: Exs: María va a su casa despues de clases (la casa de ella). María goes to her house after school. Ana pone sus libros en una mochila para las clases (los libros de Ana). Ana puts her books in a backpack for school.

Los usos de nuestro: Our Nuestro means "our“ and it has 4 forms to agree in both number and gender: nuestro hermanoour brother nuestra hermanaour sister nuestros hermanosour brothers nuestras hermanasour sisters

Excepción: Note that these possessive adjectives are not used with articles of clothing or body parts. Rather, the definite article (el, los, la, las) is used. Me gusta el vestido nuevo. I like my new dress. Ana lleva la blusa roja. Ana is wearing her red blouse. Me duelen los ojos. My eyes hurt.

Practica: I. Translate the following poss. adj. into Spanish: ex: my / libro = mi libro 1. Your / casa 2. His / amigos 3. Our / familia 4. My / cuadernos 5. Our / clases 6. Their / madre 7. Their / libros

Practica: III. Fill in the blank with the correct poss. adj. which refers to the subj. of the sent.: Ex: Yo leo un libro en mi cuarto. 1. Tu miras las peliculas al cine con __ amigos. 2. Ernesto prefiere _____ revistas. 3. Los chicos van a pasar ___ vacaciones en Mexico. 4. Escribo muchas cartas a ____ abuelos en Puerto Rico. 5. Mi mejor amiga y yo pensamos ir de compras a ______ tienda favorita en el centro. 6. La clase tiene _____ pruebas cada viernes.
