11/04/2017 Licenciamiento de productos de la familia de servidores Microsoft BackOffice The BackOffice family of server applications includes: Windows NT Server Microsoft SQL Server Microsoft Exchange Server SNA Server Systems Management Server BackOffice Server suite All share the same license terms. Today I will discuss the details of how the license model for the BackOffice family of server applications works to enable customers flexible deployment at a fair cost.

Licencia de Acceso de Cliente (CAL) Servidor Licenciamiento de BackOffice Servidores y Licencias de Acceso de Cliente 11/04/2017 Network solutions generally have two components - servers that contain information and provide services and clients that access the information and services. Microsoft’s licensing model separates the Client Access Licenses from the server. The separate server and Client Access Licenses for the entire BackOffice family of server applications provides customers the flexibility to build any size deployment at a fair total solution cost. A complete BackOffice network requires at least one server license and typically as many Client Access Licenses as the customer has connected machines. 5 users supported on a small LAN require one server license and 5 Client Access Licenses. A data center with 50 servers supporting 2000 users requires 50 server licenses and 2000 Client Access Licenses. If the customer wants to add one more server to the network, then he/she will have to purchase one additional server license. If the customer wants to increase the number of users, then he/she will have to purchase only the additional Client Access Licenses, no matter how many servers are installed. The server software is not hardcoded to restrict the number of computer or workstations that are able to connect, rather this number is established by the quantity of Client Access Licenses purchased and can be controlled by the system administrator Licencia de Acceso de Cliente (CAL) Servidor

A client access license is not software. It is a legal document that gives the user the right to access the services of the server software. In a sense, it is a way to create servers of different capacities. For example, if you want to create a 10 user server, you combine 1 server license and 10 client access licenses. A 250 user server would be created by combining 1 server license and 250 client access licenses. As you can see, this gives you, the customer, the flexibility to create any capacity server you need. Client Access Licenses are available for both the individual server products (Windows NT Server, SQL Server, etc.) or for all of Microsoft’s server products through a license we call the Microsoft BackOffice client access license. The BackOffice client access license is the most cost effective way to acquire the rights to use the complete family of server software. Windows NT Server SQL Server SNA Server Systems Management Server Microsoft Exchange Microsoft BackOffice

The license policy for the Microsoft BackOffice family offers two distinct license provisions. Customers may select the alternative that best suits their organization. It is not necessary to notify Microsoft of the licensing option selected. For either option, a server license is required for the right to run the server software on a particular system. Both options also require the purchase of a Client Access License for each client’s rights to access a particular server product. Customers have a choice for the manner in which these Client Access Licenses are implemented, either “Per Seat” or “Per Server”.

Los Clientes peden acceder a cualquier servidor 11/04/2017 Opcion Por Asiento Windows NT Server Microsoft SQL Server Microsoft Site Server Microsoft SNA Server Systems Management Server Microsoft Exchange Server Microsoft BackOffice Licencia de Servidor Licencia de Servidor CAL CAL Microsoft has introduced a more flexible approach - Per Seat Client Licensing. You buy only the number of client access licenses you need – one for each computer that will access a server product. With Per Seat licensing, a Client Access License is associated with a specific computer, e.g., seat. Using this alternative, client computers are allowed access to any server on the network running a particular BackOffice application, provided each client machine is licensed with the appropriate Client Access License. Once a computer has been licensed for Windows NT Server, for example, it has permission to access any Windows NT Server. The Per Seat mode is most economical in distributed computing environments where multiple servers within an organization provide services to clients. In general, the Per Seat option is the most economical one to choose when the use of a server is pervasive or guaranteed access is needed to such services as file and print, or business-critical applications. All Microsoft BackOffice family products may be licensed in this mode. For The BackOffice server suite and Systems Management Server the Per Seat mode is the only option. CAL MS-DOS, MAC, OS/2 Windows for Workgroups Windows NT Workstation Los Clientes peden acceder a cualquier servidor

11/04/2017 Opción Por Servidor 3 Licencias de Acceso de Cliente Microsoft SQL Server Microsoft Site Server Windows NT Server SNA Server Licencia de Servidor For Exchange, NT Server, SQL Server and SNA Server With Per Server licensing, a Client Access License is associated with a particular server. This alternative allows concurrent-use licensing; e.g., if a customer decides to use the server in Per Server mode, he/she must then have at least as many Client Access Licenses dedicated to that server as the maximum number of clients that will connect to that server at any one point in time. Example A company is planning to use Windows NT Server for remote access services. The company has 200 employees but anticipates that only 50 employees will dial in at any one time. In this case, the company should license Windows NT Server in the Per Server mode and purchase 50 Client Access Licenses for that server. The Per Server option is the most economical one to choose for occasional-use servers, such as when a great number of clients will only access a server on an occasional basis, or for special-use servers such as those running Remote Access Service, Internet servers, or bulletin board servers.

The company has three servers and 100 employees. In this example, all the employees log on to a “home” server and, normally, access one additional server during the day. If the Per Seat licensing mode is selected, the company would purchase 100 Client Access Licenses, and the employees could access all the servers. If the Per Server licensing mode is selected, the company would have to determine the maximum number of concurrent connections to any one server to guarantee access for all users. Depending on the demand, this may require them to purchase more than 100 Client Access Licenses. For example, if 33 employees use one of the servers as their home server but, on average, 20 employees normally connect to an additional server, then the maximum number of concurrent connections for each server might be 53. That would require the purchase of 159 Client Access Licenses or 53 for each of the three computers. In general, the Per Seat option is the most economical one to choose when the use of a server is pervasive or guaranteed access is needed to such services as file and print, or business-critical applications.

11/04/2017 ¿Puedo cambiar? Se debe comprar una CAL adicional para un cuarto cliente CAL You can do a one time conversion from concurrent use licenses to per desktop licenses. There is no charge, and you don’t need to notify Microsoft. You convert the server, which then requires that every desktop accessing that server have a client access license. The advantage to this model of licensing is that each client can now access all servers in the enterprise. >>Example In contrast with the Remote Access Server example, when the number of Client Access Licenses in the Per Server mode approaches or is greater than the total number of clients in an organization, then switching to the Per Seat mode becomes more cost effective. For example, consider a company that has a total of 200 workstations and four Windows NT Server computers, each with 50 Client Access Licenses, for a total of 200 Client Access Licenses in the Per Server mode. The company would want to switch the servers to the Per Seat mode to reduce administrative overhead costs and guarantee access to such services as file and print, or business-critical applications on all the servers. SNA Server CAL CAL CAL CAL Clientes

¿Cuándo cambiar? SQL Server A 25 CALs concurrentes 50 Clientes CALs 11/04/2017 ¿Cuándo cambiar? CALs SQL Server A 25 CALs concurrentes Let’s say a company begins by deploying a single server, supporting a particular application. If 50 people need access to the application, but no more than 25 at a time, then the concurrent or per server mode makes sense. 50 Clientes

But let’s take a look at what happens when they add a second server. If they add this server, to support a second, large application, and the same 50 people need access to this server, then it makes sense to move to the per desktop model. That way, any further servers can be rolled out by simply purchasing server licenses. You do not have to buy any more user capacity. 50 Clientes

Herramientas de Licenciamiento 11/04/2017 Herramientas de Licenciamiento Un juego de herramientas para toda la familia de servidores BackOffice Incluidas en Windows NT Server Seguimiento del uso del servidor bajo el modo “Por Asiento” Administre conexiones concurrentes en el modo “Por Servidor” Facilita la administración de licencias Tracking licenses manually on local computers or within a small domain is time consuming but possible. Tracking licenses without the assistance of automated tools across an entire organization or enterprise with multiple domains can be very difficult, extremely costly, and overly time consuming. A tool that manages and tracks licenses and usage throughout an organization can help contain these costs. A tool that automatically replicates licensing data from all the primary domain controllers (PDCs) in the organization to a centralized database on a specified master server can also make it easier for a company to comply with legal requirements. Windows NT Server includes the following two new administrative tools that help to reduce these costs and the administrative overhead of license tracking: * The Licensing option in Control Panel * The License Manager program in the Network Administration program group After the initial Setup process, an administrator can use the Licensing option in Control Panel if they need to change the licensing mode on that local computer from Per Server to Per Seat (a one-time only option). They can also use it to configure licensing replication for that computer. Administrators can use the License Manager program to obtain a centralized view of Per Seat and Per Server licenses across the organization, manage the purchasing or deleting of licenses for products on network servers over which they have administrative rights, view usage statistics per user, and balance the licensing replication load across the network.

Instalación de Herramientas de Licenciamiento 11/04/2017 Instalación de Herramientas de Licenciamiento Windows NT Server Setup presents a Choose Licensing Mode dialog box. It also allows access through Help to online versions of the Microsoft Client Access License and Server License agreements. You will be required to select a licensing option and accept the terms of the license agreement for Setup to complete. In this dialog box, you must indicate whether you want the BackOffice application to be installed in the Per Server or Per Seat licensing mode. If you select the Per Server option, you must specify during Setup the number of Client Access Licenses (which corresponds to the number of concurrent connections) that you have purchased for that server.

The BackOffice Server license requires all component products to be installed on one server and cannot be split among >1 server. The BackOffice Client Access License licenses a single client computer and the component licenses cannot be split among >1 client computer. Customers may acquire BackOffice Client Access Licenses to access standalone servers. In other words, a BackOffice Client Access License gives that client the right to access the services of all the products mentioned above, regardless of whether the server licenses for those products were acquired through a BackOffice Server license or the individual product server licenses. A BackOffice Client Access License can only be used in the Per Seat Mode, described above. The Server is often used for departmental or branch office solutions, where there is a requirement for multiple applications, but not a great deal of heavy usage activity. Are you using >3 products on one server? The CAL is commonly purchased by organizations who have standardized on many of the BO applications. The BO CAL is a cost effective (low price + reduced administration) way to purchase access rights for all users. Are you accessing >3 server applications, in the per seat mode?

Windows NT Server is a multi-purpose operating system. It can be used as a platform for server applications and for providing file and print sharing services to networked clients. A Windows NT Server Client Access License will be required only when Windows NT is providing basic file and print sharing network services, not when it is operating solely as a platform for a server application.

Licenciamiento de Internet 11/04/2017 Licenciamiento de Internet Conector Internet para SQL Server Multiplexing Internet Database Conector, Internet Mail Conector HTTP vs Windows NT Server File Sharing The SQL Server Internet Connector is available for any customer connecting a Microsoft Internet Information Server or any equivalent 3rd party web server to Microsoft SQL Server™. It is purchased independent of SQL Server and SQL Server Client Access Licenses, and allows an unlimited number of Internet and Intranet connections to a single SQL Server. Web servers are multiplexors reducing the visible client connections to 1. The license requires a CAL for each distinct connection into the front-end multiplexor >> since client connections into a Web server are hard to count we address this specific deployment with the SQL Server Internet Connector. To help describe our many uses of the word “connector”. IN addition to the SQL Server Internet Connector described above: Internet Database Connector: software feature of Internet Information Server allowing database connectivity. Internet Mail Connector: An SMTP gateway for the Exchange Server. Windows NT Server includes support for telnet and ftp which are often used as means to connect to an Internet server hosted on Windows NT Server. Telnet and ftp connections do not use Windows NT Server basic network services and, therefore, do not require Windows NT Server Client Access Licenses. Internet Information Server or any third party Web server application running on Windows NT Server providing HTTP sharing of HTML files is not using Windows NT Server’s basic network services and does not require Client Access Licenses.

The Server Licensing model has been designed to give the customer maximum flexibility and ease of administration particularly as customer set up more client/server based solutions With the BackOffice licensing model client licenses and servers are acquired separately, so the customer can acquire exactly what he/she needs rather than being constrained by pre-existing configurations of servers and users. This also allows the model to scale as a customers network grows. There is no upgrade penalty, as there are with other licensing models, if your organizations grows. if you have 53 users you only need to buy 53 licenses rather than 100 or more. The basic model is also consistent across all the server products, so you don’t have to worry how to license multiple products that have different, often conflicting, licensing models. In Windows NT Server there are tools to help the administrator manage licensing for both Per Server and Per Seat licensing options.
