Introducción a 8.2 El imperfecto Mosaicos pp ,

In Spanish there is more than one way to talk about the past. To talk about actions that happened frequently or often in the past we use what is known as the IMPERFECT tense.

Imperfect… The imperfect is how to talk about habitual or repeated actions in the past. It’s how we would say in English, “I use to…” or “There use to be…” And most people think the imperfect is very easy to conjugate.

Imperfect… HABLARCOMERVIVIR Yohablabacomíavivía Túhablabascomíasvivías Ud., él, ella hablabacomíavivía nosotros/ashablabamoscomíamosvivíamos vosotros/ashablabaiscomíaisvivíais Uds, ellos/as hablabancomíanvivían

The imperfect has a lot of English equivalents… There are no stem changes in the imperfect. Furthermore there are only 3 irregulars in the imperfect: IR, SER, VER…

IRSERVER ibaeraveía ibaserasveías ibaeraveía íbamoséramosveíamos ibaiseraisveíais ibaneranveían

However, just because there are two ways to talk about the past (preterit & imperfect) does not mean that you can use them both to mean the same thing…

Uses of the preterit…  To talk about the beginning or end of an action, event, or condition.  Juan terminó a las siete.  Paco hizo su tarea.  Omar y Angela corrieron dos milas.  Anoche, yo trabajé en mi oficina.

Uses of the preterit…  To talk about an event or action or condition that occurred over a period of time with a defined beginning and end.  Yo viví en México por un año.  Ellos hicieron ejercicio por tres horas.  María trabajó en California este verano.

Uses of the preterit…  To narrate a sequence of completed events  Me levanté, bebí un refresco, y salí de mi cuarto.

Uses of the imperfect…  To talk about the customary or habitual actions or events in the pasts.  Todos los días jugabamos el fútbol y comíamos en la casa de mi abuelita.  Nadaba en la playa cuando vivía en Florida.

Uses of the imperfect…  To describe conditions and characteristics in the past.  La casa era blanca y tenía un garaje.  El presidente era de Georgia y hablaba lentamente.

Uses of the imperfect…  To tell time and age in the past.  Eran las once de la noche.  Ella tenía diez años entonces.

Uses of the imperfect…  To talk about an ongoing part of an event, action, or condition.  En ese momento, no había mucha comida y todos tenían hambre.

Imperfect & Preterit together  When telling a story, use the imperfect for the background info and the preterit tells what happened. (Preterit interrupts the imperfect)  Era noche y yo dormía cuando me llamó mi madre.

En Conclusión…  The preterit and imperfect are different ways of distinguishing actions in the past.

¡Qué tengan buen fin de semana!
