9 y el que los invitó a los dos venga a decirte: ‘Déjale el lugar a éste’, y tengas que ir a ocupar, lleno de vergüenza, el último asiento. 10 Por el contrario, cuando te inviten, ocupa el último lugar, para que, cuando venga el que te invitó, te diga: ‘Amigo, acércate a la cabecera’. Entonces te verás honrado en presencia de todos los convidados. 11 Porque el que se engrandece a sí mismo, será humillado; y el que se humilla, será engrandecido”.

12 Luego dijo al que lo había invitado: “Cuando des una comida o una cena, no invites a tus amigos, ni a tus hermanos, ni a tus parientes, ni a los vecinos ricos; porque puede ser que ellos te inviten a su vez, y con eso quedarías recompensado. 13 Al contrario, cuando des un banquete, invita a los pobres, a los lisiados, a los cojos y a los ciegos; 14 y así serás dichoso, porque ellos no tienen con qué pagarte; pero ya se te pagará, cuando resuciten los justos”.

Luke 14:1, 7 - 14 14:1 On a Sabbath Jesus went to dine at the home of one of the leading Pharisees, and the people there were observing him carefully. 14:7 He told a parable to those who had been invited, noticing how they were choosing the places of honor at the table. 14:8 “When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not recline at table in the place of honor. A more distinguished guest than you may have been invited by him,

9 and the host who invited both of you may approach you and say, ‘Give your place to this man,’ and then you would proceed with embarrassment to take the lowest place. 10 Rather, when you are invited, go and take the lowest place so that when the host comes to you he may say, ‘My friend, move up to a higher position.’ Then you will enjoy the esteem of your companions at the table. 11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

12 Then he said to the host who invited him, “When you hold a lunch or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or your wealthy neighbors, in case they may invite you back and you have repayment. 13 Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; 14 blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”

Reflections on Luke 14:1, 7 - 14 Reflexiones en Lucas 14:1, 7 - 14 by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. Sept. 1, 2013 When we read the gospel selection for today, we notice that it was on the Sabbath. The leading Pharisees observe Jesus very carefully. They are looking for fault. Jesus takes occasion to show them that Sabbath laws never forbid showing mercy and kindness to those who were in need (Cyril of Alexandria, Homily 101).

Cuando leemos la selección del evangelio de hoy, notamos que sucedió en el día sábado. Los fariseos principales observaban a Jesús cuidadosamente. Buscaban una falta. Jesús toma la ocasión para mostrarles que las leyes del sábado nunca prohíben mostrar misericordia o cariño a los necesitados (Cirilio de Alejandría, Homilía 101).

They bring a man with dropsy to him They bring a man with dropsy to him. Jesus looks at the Pharisees and asks them: “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not?” They were silent. Jesus then proceeds to heal the man with dropsy, and says, “Which of you, having a son or an ox that has fallen into a well, will not immediately pull him out on a Sabbath day? And they could not reply to this” (Luke 14:2-6).

In Luke 13:14 the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, said to his people: “There are six days on which work ought to be done, come on those days and be healed, and not on the Sabbath day.” Then the Lord answered him, “You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his ass away from the manger, and lead it away to water it?”

En otra ocasión, en Lucas 13:14, el jefe de la sinagoga, indigno porque Jesús había sanado en el sábado, dijo a la gente: “Hay seis días de trabajo. Vengan esos días a que los curen, y no los sábados.” Entonces Jesús le dijo: “¡Hipócritas! Cualquiera de ustedes ¿no desata del pesebre al buey o al burro, y lo lleva a abrevar aunque sea sábado?”

In that context, Jesus’ instructions on humility are calling on the Pharisees to imitate him in a life that is modest and praise worthy, and not to be seekers of vainglory as they demonstrated at this banquet (Cyril of Alexandria, Homily 101).

The best way to keep the Sabbath is by practicing humility The best way to keep the Sabbath is by practicing humility. That is what is most pleasing to God. It is not good to long for the better seat. And it is not good to use your position of power to deny good to anyone on the Sabbath, be it a healing, or be it aid to the poor. And obviously, it was not a good idea to stay silent from ill will, as they did, trying to show they were super smart and better than Jesus.

El mejor modo de guardar el sábado es practicando la humildad El mejor modo de guardar el sábado es practicando la humildad. Eso es lo que más complace a Dios. No es bueno anhelar los mejores asientos. Y no es bueno usar su posición de poder para negar hacer el bien a cualesquiera en el sábado, ya sea una curación, o alguna ayuda a los pobres. Obviamente, no es buena idea quedarse silencios de mala gana, como lo hicieron ellos, al tratar de mostrar que eran súper listos y mejores que Jesús.

Instead of observing him so carefully, they should have examined their own motives first. In Matthew 23:23 he clearly called the scribes and Pharisees hypocrites and blind guides, for tithing mint, and dill and cumin, but neglecting weightier matters of the law, justice, mercy, and faith.

En Mateo 23:23 Él claramente les llama a los fariseos hipócritas y guías ciegos, porque pagaban el diezmo de la hierbabuena, del eneldo y del comino, mientras descuidaban lo mas grave de la ley: la justicia, el buen corazón, y la lealtad.

The leading Pharisee that invited him to dinner must have assumed that if Jesus came, he could then observe him and tell him off, if he would not observe the Sabbath. He was assuming the top seat. But Jesus by his example and clear teaching humbled him. “Everyone who exalts himself, shall be humbled.”

El principal fariseo que invito a Jesús a la cena ha de haber presumido que si Jesús venía, lo podían observar y corregirlo, por si acaso no observaba el sábado. Presumía que él era el más alto. Pero Jesús por su ejemplo y por su enseñanza clara lo humillo. “Todo aquel que se enaltece, será humillado.”

St Irenaeus (Against Heresies 5.32.2), asks “Where are the hundredfold rewards in this age for the dinners offered to the poor? These things will be during the times of the kingdom, on the seventh day that is sanctified when God rested from all the works that he made. This is the true Sabbath of the just, in which they will have no earthly work to do, but will have a table prepared before them by God, who will feed them with all kinds of delicacies”.

Dios Padre es el que determina quien ha de ser el más alto en el banquete celestial. San Ireneo (Contra Herejías 5.32.2), dice: “¿Donde están los premios en esta época por las comidas ofrecidas a los pobres? Estas cosas serán para los tiempos del reino, en el séptimo día que es santificado cuando Dios descanso de todo lo que hizo. Este es el verdadero sábado de los justos, en el cual no tendrán ningún trabajo mundano que hacer, pero tendrán una mesa preparada ante ellos por Dios, que les dará de comer con toda clase de delicias”.

This does not mean that rewards of the saints for labors of love will be in things pertaining to the body (Cyril of Alexandria, Commentary on Luke, Homily 104). Rather it will be heavenly food, an agape, or love feast. It will be a banquet of the Word. Love “bears all things, endures all things, and hopes all things. Love never fails” (1 Corinthians 13:8).

Esto no quiere decir que los premios de los santos por sus obras de caridad serán en cosas de la carne (Cirilio de Alejandría, Comentario de Lucas, Homilía 104). Mas bien será una comida celestial, un ágape, una fiesta de amor. Será el banquete de la Palabra. El amor “aguanta siempre, perdura todo, espera todo. El amor nunca falla” (1 Corintios 13:8).

“If I distribute my goods to the poor and do not have love, I am nothing” (1 Corinthians 13:3). The whole law and the word depend on this love (Matthew 22:40). Yes, there will be a heavenly feast to which we are all invited. But the first shall be last, and the last shall be first.

“Si distribuyo mis posesiones a los pobres y no tengo amor, soy nada” (1 Corintios 13:3). Toda la ley y toda la palabra dependen de este amor (Mateo 22:40). Sí habrá una fiesta celestial a la cual somos invitados. Pero los primeros serán últimos, y los últimos serán primeros.

St. Augustine (Sermons 354.8), says: “There are humble religious, and there are proud religious. The proud ones should not promise themselves the kingdom of God. Why seek the higher place with an appetite for the heights, when you can make it simply by holding on to lowliness? If you exalt yourself, God throws you down. If you cast yourself down, God lifts you up”.

San Agustín (Sermones 354.8), dice: “Hay religiosos humildes, y hay religiosos orgullosos. Los orgullosos no se deben prometerse el reino de Dios. ¿Por qué buscar el lugar mas alto con un apetito para las alturas, cuando puedes llegar allí simplemente al rebajarte? Si te enalteces, Dios te tumbará. Pero si te rebajas, Dios te levantará”.

The rich young man went away sad, rather than give up his possessions. Another one built more and more barns, to store his possessions, rather than share with the poor. He forgot he had to give an account that very day. Then there was the one who had to attend to his business, and another to his wife. The senselessly gave themselves to earthly matters, they could not see the spiritual (Cyril of Alexandria, Homily 104).

Se olvido que ese mismo día se le pediría una cuenta. Y luego había uno que tenia que atender a sus negocios, otro a su esposa. Insensatamente se entregaron a cosas de este mundo, no pudieron ver lo espiritual (Cirilio de Alejandría, Homilia 104).

God then turned to the Gentiles God then turned to the Gentiles. He sent his messengers to the highways (Matthew 22:9), to invite to the marriage feast the poor, the maimed and the blind. It showed the Lord forgives the weakness of sinners!

Dios entonces procedió a los gentiles Dios entonces procedió a los gentiles. Mando sus mensajeros a los caminos (Mateo 22:9). Los invito a la boda a todos los que encontraron, a los pobres, a los lisiados, a los ciegos. Esto indica que el Señor perdona las debilidades de los pecadores.

Our Lady is the first to obey. She says: “Let it be Our Lady is the first to obey. She says: “Let it be!” And she loves the poor, and consoles the afflicted, and invites them to the kingdom. Let us be the first to join her. What a blessing! What joy! What a privilege!

Nuestra Señora es la primera para obedecer. Dice: “ ¡ Hágase en mi Nuestra Señora es la primera para obedecer. Dice: “ ¡ Hágase en mi ! ” Y ella ama a los pobres, consuela a los afligidos, y los invita al reino. Vayamos a ser los primeros para acompañarla. ¡Que bendición! ¡Que alegría! ¡Que privilegio!
