How to form the Present Progressive Tense

The present progressive tense is the tense you use when you want to talk about what is going on right now. Forming the present progressive in Spanish is very easy. It is a two-step process. The first step is to write the correct form of the verb “estar” (don’t forget accents!). I am studying. Yo estoy _________. She is eating. Ella está _________. We are listening. Nosotros estamos ___. They are writing. Ellos están ______.

The second step is to remove the –ar, -er, or –ir from the ending of the infinitive, and add “-ando” if the verb is an –ar verb and “-iendo” if the verb is an –er or –ir verb. I am studying. (estudiar) Yo estoy estudiando. She is eating. (comer) Ella está comiendo. We are listening. (escuchar) Nosotros estamos escuchando. They are writing. (escribir) Ellos están escribiendo.

Let’s do some examples. Write the correct present progressive form of the given verb. Remember – it’s a two-part process. The answer will appear after 10 seconds. Juan una pizza. (comer) está comiendo Ellos una canción. (cantar) están cantando Tú una carta. (escribir) estás escribiendo Nosotros español. (estudiar) estamos estudiando
