The verbs we learned in Chapter 1 were in the infinitive form. That means their English translation would be like… “to” do something. Hablar=to speak; correr=to run; etc. Verbs fall under one of three categories: -ar, -er, and –ir. Most verbs in Spanish end in –ar. We will be studying how to conjugate verbs in –ar today.

To conjugate a verb, that means we are going to change the ending to indicate who or what is doing the action. Instead of saying “to speak” (hablar), we will say “I speak” (hablo) or “you speak” (hablas). Do you see how the ending changed? No? Then check out the next slide.

To conjugate a regular –ar verb, you drop the last two letters (ar) off the infinitive. Then you add the appropriate ending to what’s left, which is the root, or stem. So now you can say, I speak, you speak, he speaks, she speaks, we speak, you all speak, they speak! Let’s look at it again!

It’s easy! Here’s what you need to remember. If it’s one name, person, or thing, you use the él or ella form (ending: -a). (Example: Julia baila.) If it’s more than one name, person, or thing, you use the ellos or ellas form (ending: -an). (Example: Marta y Julia bailan.) If “I” am included in the group, you always use the nosotros form (ending: -amos). (Example: Julia y yo bailamos.) If “you” are included in the group, you use either the vosotros form (ending: -áis) or the ustedes form (ending: -an). (Example: Tú y Julia bailan).
