El pretérito  You already know how to speak in the present tense.  You know one way to speak in the future…  (ir + a + infinitive)  Now you need to know how to speak in the past.

El pretérito  There is a whole new set of verb endings for the past.  The tense used to express the simple past is called the pretérito. (preterite)

The preterite has a whole new set of endings!  Regular –ar verbs   Endings:   é I amos  aste I__X__  ó___I aron_   Ejemplo:   hablar  hablé I hablamos  hablaste I____X___  habló___I hablaron_  Note the difference between the yo form in the present tense ( hablo ) (I speak) and the él/ella/usted form in the preterite tense ( habló ) (he/she speaks) is the accent over the o in habló. This is why accents matter!

 En el verano hace sol y hace mucho calor.  En el otoño llueve y hace viento.

 Three ways to say “It’s raining”:  Está lloviendo.  Llueve.  Hay lluvia.  Three ways to say “It’s snowing”:  Está nevando.  Nieva.  Hay nieve.

 “Hay” for tangibles:  Hay nieve.  Hay lluvia.  These are things you can touch.  “Hace” for intangibles:  Hace viento.  Hace sol.  Hace calor.  Hace frío.  These are things you can feel, but you can’t hold them in your hand.
