¿Qué? Verbs that end in Car – tocar Gar – jugar Zar – almorzar Have a spelling change in the YO FORM ONLY

¿Por qué? There are hard and soft pronunciations of Cs & Gs in Spanish. It is decided by the vowel that follows it. As make them have a hard sound. Es make them soft. HardSoft carrocenar gatogemelo If we want the soft sound of the Z…

Entonces, ¿qué hacemos? In order to keep the hard sounds of C & G, and soft Z sound, we change the letters. Cqutocar yo toqué Ggujugaryo jugué Zcalmorzaryo almorcé Tocar Jugar Almorzar toquétocamosjuguéjugamosalmorcé almorzamos tocastetocasteisjugastejugasteisalmorzaste almorzasteis tocótocaronjugójugaronalmorzó almorzaron

Otra vez… Since –car –gar –zar verbs are AR verbs, they usually have As in the ending. Since preterite uses Es for the yo form for AR verbs, it changes the sound of the C, G & Z. Changing the spelling helps keep the hard consonant sound we want. Cqu Ggu Zc
