Unidad 2, Lección 2 Los verbos reflexivos

Whats the difference? Ana mira el reloj. Ana se mira. Ana is looking at the clock. Ana is looking at herself. Reflexive NOT Reflexive

Reflexive Verbs explain an action done to oneself the subject of a reflexive verb performs and receives the action (the action is reflected back to the subject) example: I am brushing my hair. She is taking a bath. (is bathing herself).

Reflexive Pronouns menos teXXXXX se

A reflexive verb is formed by using the reflexive pronoun and the corresponding form of the verb me + yo formnos + nosotros form te + tú form XXXXXXXXXXXX se + él, ella, Ud. formse + ellos, ellas, Uds. form The reflexive pronouns come directly before the conjugated verb

EXAMPLES bañarse-to bathe oneself/to take a bath You are taking a bath (bathing yourself). Te bañas. I am taking a bath (bathing myself). Me baño.Nos bañamos. We are taking a bath (bathing ourselves). Se bañan.Se baña. They/You are taking a bath (bathing themselves/ yourselves). He/She is taking /You are taking a bath (bathing himself/ herself/yourself).

Lets Practice First, I wake up at six. –Primero, me despierto a las seis. Then I get up. –Entonces me levanto. Later I shower and I shave. –Luego me ducho y me afeito. Finally I put clothes on myself. –Por fin me pongo la ropa.

Other important info… It is assumed that body parts belong to the subject of the sentence I am brushing my teeth. Parts of the body and articles of clothing use definite articles, not possessive adj. (mi/mis, tu/tus, su/sus, etc.) Me cepillo los dientes.

Other important info… To make the sentence negative, add no before the reflexive pronoun Manuel no se afeita. Manuel is not shaving (himself).

Remember the verb endings? Verbs that end in ar: o, as, a, amos, an Cepillo, cepillas, cepilla, cepillamos, cepillan Verbs that end in er/ir: o, es, e, imos/emos, en Pongo*, pones, pone, ponemos, ponen

Of course there are a few stem- changers e-ie: Despertarse *Remember the rule? The e (2 nd one if there are 2) changes to ie in all forms BUT nosotros. Me despierto*Nos despertamos Te despiertas Se despiertaSe despiertan

A few more stem-changers o-ue: Acostarse, Dormirse The o changes to ue in all forms BUT nosotros. *Double check the endings!! Me acuesto*Nos acostamos Te acuestas Se acuestaSe acuestan

A few more stem-changers o-ue:Dormirse The o changes to ue in all forms BUT nosotros. *Double check the endings!! Me duermo*Nos dormimos Te duermes Se duermeSe duermen

See the difference? Me acuesto*Nos acostamos Te acuestas Se acuesta Se acuestan Vs. Me duermo *Nos dormimos Te duermes Se duerme Se duermen

Other important info… When an infinitive is used, the reflexive pronoun is attached to the infinitive or placed before the conjugated verb. Las muchachas van a maquillarse. The girls are going to put on make-up (going to put make-up on themselves). Me tengo que bañar. I have to take a bath (bathe myself).

Lets Practice Acostarse – yo –Me acuesto Cepillarse – ella –Se cepilla Dormirse - nosotros –Nos dormimos Ducharse – tú –Te duchas

Lets Practice I wash my face –Me lavo la cara She puts on makeup –Ella se maquilla They dry their hands –Ellos se secan las manos We comb our hair –Nos peinamos el pelo

Lets Practice- attaching You need to comb your hair. –Necesitas peinarte el pelo. Te necesitas peinar el pelo. We want to dry ourselves. –Queremos secarnos. Nos queremos secar. She has to go to bed. –Ella tiene que acostarse. Se tiene que acostar. They should brush their teeth. –Deben cepillarse los dientes. Se deben cepillar los dientes.
