Usted Commands. Formal Commands Are used when you are speaking to someone who is older than you. Used as a way to be polite and show respect.

El imperativo (Los mandatos) Commands are used to tell someone to do something. Examples: Speak Spanish! Wash the dog! Clean the house! Turn up that loud music!

1 2 How to form formal commands in Spanish It is very easy to form commands for usted and ustedes in Spanish. 1 Begin with the yo form in the present tense and drop the o. 2 If it is an –ar verb, add –e for usted and –en for ustedes. If it is an –er or –ir verb, add –a for usted and –an for ustedes.

Ejemplos: Gastar gasto (present tense yo form) gaste (usted command form) gasten (ustedes command form) ¡Gasten dinero! = Spend money!

4 important verbs that do not follow the rules for formal commands are dar, ir, ser and saber. You need to memorize these! ¡Dé! – ¡Den! = Give! ¡Vaya! – ¡Vayan! = Go! ¡Sea! – ¡Sean! = Be! ¡Sepa! – ¡Sepan! = Know!
