Preterite Tense Verbs An action begun and completed in the past in a relative moment. I ate a sandwich yesterday. You ran in the park last night. He sang in the choir last Sunday. We took our Spanish Test two days ago. They drank the water after the ballgame last night.

In Spanish different types of past tense verbs are many times activated by certain keywords.

Keywords used for the preterite tense: Anoche (last night) Ayer (yesterday) Anteayer (day before yesterday) Esta mañana (this morning) El año pasado (last year) El mes pasado (last month) La semana pasada (last week) Hace dos días (two days ago)

So, now you understand why the preterite past tense verb is being used …..the relative moment… Now, lets look at how to form the preterite past tense in Spanish…

Preterite Tense Verb endings: Just like present tense verbs you drop the –ar, -er, or the –ir and add the appropriate endings. Just like present tense verbs there are some irregular verbs. There are some sandal verbs or stem- changing verbs but only in –ir verbs.

How to form an –ar verb: Hablar Habl Now add endings to the stem…. Habl é aste ó amos aron

How to form an –er verb: Comer Now add endings to the stem…. Com í iste ió imos ieron

How to form an –ir verb. Viv It is the same as the –er verb!!! ir Then add the endings íimos iste Ióieron
