Review of the verb “estar” in the present tense Yo estoyNosotros estamos Tú estásVosotros estáis Ud. estáUds. están ÉlestáEllos están Ella estáEllas están Remember that “It” does not exist as a subject pronoun, so when referring to a thing, the form “está” is used.

Well -being The verb “estar” is used to ask about and to state well-being and health. – ¿Cómo estás? – Estoy bien. – No estoy bien. – ¿Cómo está Juan? – Juan está enfermo.

Estar for location When we want to ask or tell location we use the verb “estar” (to be). The verb “estar” is used to tell the location of: – Person(s) – Place(s) – Thing(s)

Asking the location of person(s), place(s), and thing(s) To ask location, we use the interrogative word ¿Dónde? (Where?) The question is formed as follows: ¿Dónde + (the present tense of estar )+ (the person, place, or thing)? OJO: The present tense of “estar” agrees with the person, place, or thing, which is the subject of the sentence.

English Person(s): Where are you? Where is the student? Place(s): Where are the countries? Where is the library? Thing(s): Where are the pens? Where is a pencil? Español Persona(s): ¿Dónde estás tú? ¿ Dónde está el estudiante? Lugar(es): ¿ Dónde están los países? ¿ Dónde está la biblioteca ? Cosa(s): ¿ Dónde están los bolígrafos? ¿ Dónde está un lápiz?

Telling the location of person(s), place(s), and thing(s) To tell the location we state the following: Person(s) + estar in the present + location. Place(s) + estar in the present + location. Thing(s) + estar in the present + location. Note: Subject + verb+ rest.

Adverbs that describe the location Some simple words to describe location are: – aquí (here) – ahí (there) – allí ( way over there, farther away)

English Person(s): I am here. The student is there. Place(s): The countries are way over there. The library is there. Thing(s): The pens are here. The pencil is there. Español Persona(s): Estoy aquí. El estudiante está ahí. Lugar(es): Los países están allí. La biblioteca está ahí. Cosa(s): Los bolígrafos están aquí. El lápiz está ahí.

Using prepositions of place to describe location In addition to adverbs, prepositions of place can be used to describe location after the verb “estar.” Common prepositions of place can be found on page 54 of the Vistas text.
